Coming To America. 'file last time I saw .Switzerland was on the 19th of May 1887. It was because 1 had never seen any other land that 1 was vejy glad when I heard that we were edming to Amerieit. But I would not be so any more. My home was a little cottage with four r rooms and with a long broad porch. It just stood a little way on a large hill. There were many large hills there. Our house stood in the ventre of our orchard, near the side of a large wooils. There were many nice things about our home to makeushap- ■ py. We could see the green hills, and a : beautiful blue lake. We often saw little white looking spots on it, which were the 1 sails of little boats. Very many nice streams . are found in Switzerland; but here 1 only t find muddy little ditches. Along the banks of streams aud up the hill sideij 1 could find large strawberries growing like grass, and large evergreen woods. The hill near our 1 house was near a half mile high. At the ! top was an phi cottage. Near it was a gar--1 den filled with many nice Howers. My aunt ! came out in summer from Berne,—a large I city in Switzerland, to visit us, then wo would have a happy time gathering flowers : From the hill where the house stood, we could see all over Abe country for ‘ five to six mile. We could see to Berne and many other towns and villages; Our house stood between two villages. A few days before the 19th of May my grandfather went to a farmer to get him to take our trunks away. After a few days we were ready to start. Then tlie farmer came with white horse. We started andon went the old horse, going down the hill to the village. Going through many towns and villages we reached Castle. It is a town about as large as Montoe, but much nicer houses. There lived a man who shook hands with us. It pleased me much when
l he stranger spoke so kindly. After a while we reached Berne. There we got off the wagon. When I think about that time about the nice city, when 1 think of the. nice spring that run up out of the well stand or well-stock—with the nice stone pictures on the top of them, I some times wish I could go back again. In Berne I got on the train. This was the first train 1 ever saw in my life. There wc started. We came to Ntnisburg. Then we reached Brussels in Belgium. Then we reached the Netherlands. Then we came to the sen side at Antwerp. There we staid all night. In the morning we went to the seashore. As we went along the sea-side we saw many Iron work*. We saw many ships, iHitnoone ready-to start off. There came a man and took US down the seaside about a mile. 'There we saw a very large and strong ship with great Hags on its masts. Tlie ships had four masts and two engines. We went on that ship. It started off so softly that I did not know it. When 1 looked out I saw no land, When wecrossed the English channel I saw a white island. Ou the journey we often had fish to eat and soup with them. The fish were not very good. Once when we had fish, oneof the boys got a fish that was not goed at all to eat, so he slung it into the sea; then after a while a man asked him: “Charles, what did you do with your fish?'’ “Oh! said he, 1 sent him out to learn to swim again.” In eleven days we reached New York. There 1 saw many strange things; among them was the Brooklyn Bridge. After three days we reached Berne, in Indiana. Here my grandmother’s brother met us and took us to his home. John G.
