Tne Road Question. The road question Is one that our pet£ v pie bare beetutidkirg of some about the work, but as the season has been a bad one, they have been scared and feel that 7 they would rather wade the mud and pull '' their horses than spend some of their money in building roads; but if everything is favorable there will be some built next summer. The small piece buijt on the road east ot town near the Dent school, is a fair sample of what they would be if put in shape. The fa-mere out that way when coming to town, always stop on that small piece to rest their horses, and get a breathing spell for themselves. .The money subscribed for that piece ot road is about enough to build it, then why let it pass another winter? A still greater amount can be raised if anyone will give the matter some attention, money enough can be raised in two days’ time if any one will take hold of the matter. A number of parties have been figuring on the cost of constructing a line of six miles in length and they have estimated it from twenty-two to twenty-seven hundred dollars a mile, the stone to be twelve inches thick in the center and six inches on the ■j sides, the roadway to be twelve ieet wide, , so ihat apy one can soon figure the cost ( to a farmer adjoining the road or anyone a mile or two miles from the road. If the J’.- first i ighty acres adjoining the roa ’ was - to pav two and one-half dollars’, per acre, Ki and the balance in that proportion, you Ki' . see that the road could be built and the amount would not be so great to any j one- | Some of our people have another scheme i on foot that they exp'ct to soring next *■ “winter when the n aa. are frozen so hard ■\ that a man can't dig through. They ex pect to petition the legislature asking fora 4 general tax for to build a road through * the county north and south on the center > 1 line. This to be be done by a genera; J tax of ail the people of the county, and in ( due time build into tne main line from ' each side as fast as the people felt able to I do so. The ones to move first will be the ■>' ones to get the benefit first, so let the matter be agitated until something is done to improve the roads. Was He Murdered. — ’ In last Saturday’s Enquirer appeared an account of a tragedy that occurred near Union City, Ind., which shocked the people of Geneva. It related the death of • Frank Burdge, a young man about twenty--1 three vears ot,age, who passed the few i rt in the la&t mentinned The people of Geneva had learned to »love and respect Mr. Burdge. who was F unfortunate enough to have one bad habit, f He w-fs an honest, sober and an upright | boy, but he bad the habit of going from 1 one ton n to another on the freight trains. I He often came to Decatur and was well | acquainted with the brakemen on the G. | R. &I. road. They never refused to let ' him ride as he was a willing hand and > would cheerfully work his way through He spent a portion of last summer in •’Decatur, being employed by Robison. & Gillig. k His death is a mystery, but everything seems to confirm the belief that there must be foul play somewhere. His shirt was partily torn from his body, two or three i bruises were found on his head and one ot his hands was bruised in such away that It appears as though he received the bruises by striking a blow with his fist. It is evi I’ dent that he received the last blow from Some one while struggling for life. Upon gn examination it was found that the Iwounds which he received were not fatal, but when he succumed to the violent hand lie fell into a pool of water about two fee* deep and drowned before he became concious. j His funeral took place at Geneva last Sunday and was largely attended. Martin Again. For the third time the Democrats of the Eleventh congressional convention have called that tried and true representative, the friend of the laboring man, the ex-so'dler, the Democrat, Republican* Farmer Mutual Benefit Society, the Prohibationists and the people’s friend. The one who for the last two terms past has given his entire attention to the service i required of an officer not sparing any for his own personal enjoyment, the phonic have trusted him in the past and the future will show that they still have tnat confidence in him that has made him the most popular representative the nth district ever had and the vote this fall will 1 again show that A. N. Martin is truly 1 the man who represesnts one of the largest andmost intelligent districts in the Uni 1 ted States. Be it known to the general public that ' the Journal does the major part of the general job work for business men of Decatur and vicinity. Take away from the Democrat’s job department the job work which falls to it through the court , house officials and the printing of catalo gues tor the city and district schools and its pickings would be very slim. The official patronage goes to the Democrat on , account of political consideration and not on account of the neatness and accuracy with which the work is turned out. But for the political ‘pull” which the Democrat has it would die for want of support. Which is to say, the Journal succeeds solely on -its merits, and the Democrat • oes not succ. ed in that way.—Journal. We are sometimes amused at the hollow sound that some people make with their mouths. Judging from the talk of the Journal man he has a job department in h’s little, handsome, well equiped place of business that excels any of tlje kind in the state. For our part we do not object to Mr. Ashcraft doing the major part of the general job work for the business men of Decatur end vicinity, whicjtiwe doubt very much. The people of Decatur and vicinity have their -work to let, and as this is a free country they have„the privilege of giving it to any one whom they please. When they come to us cur artist execute their work in a neat and artistic manner, which is evidenced by them coming back again. If Mr. Ashcrait is doing such an excellent business we are glad to know it, and we will not throw a straw in his way to prevent his success. But then, Mr. Ashcraft, you should have prudence enough to allow other people the privilege of speaking of your merits, ossqzsss doubt but thev will give you credit for Illi you deserve. Now Mr. it seems to us that you under estimate the intelligence of the people of Decatnr and the surrounding country. If your merits are so great, don’t you believe that the people will find them out and let their neighbors know of the advantages of patronizing you? This will save you the trouble of making an ass of yourself in trying to Up hold your own merits. Important Notice. I will be a' City Hotel, Bluffton, Tuesday, July 12th; at the Miesse House, Decatur, Wednesday, July 13th; at Berne, forenoon of Thursday, July 14th, and at Geneva, afternoon, Thursday, July 14th.
