Attempted Suicide. -■ ■ / John Loveless Sends a Bullet. Through His Breast. A “Loveless” Widow th< Cause. Lu: Monday evening about 530 tl t guest* ot the Park H He! were startled bj the d.scharge ot a firearm in one of th upper room*. Gu*. — who occupiec the adjoining room heard some one ex claime “My God! I am shot," and upu entering the room from whence the rcpoi 1 came, discovered his fellow buarder, Johi Loveless, lying upon the floor, in a pool o blood, the deadly weapon, which the woul. 1 be suicide, used was lying by his side. The room was soon filled with people anxious to learn the cause of the trouble The wounded man was placed upon a be and Dr. Clark was summoned. Th> z. Doctor after a careful examiai.\tion found that the ball had entered t e intercostal space between the first ai»c second ribs of the right breast. The wea pon was held close to the breast, as the clothing near the wound was torn int shreds and blackened with powder, Theball took a downward course, passinc thrbugh the upper part of the right lunj. The wound although very serious is nt t necessarily fatal. Whe interrogated as I the cause ot the shooting, Loveless repliu. that he must have been like the Irshman “got hold of the wrong end of the gun. ’ This is all the explanation he would give There is no doubt but what he intended taking nis own live and that the ball was intended for his heart, but in looking in; the mirror the reflection is just tha re ver,. and in placing the revolver against hi» right breast he supposed it to be hi* lelt side. <, As usual there is a woman .in the care. Loveless who is 32 years old, came to thi. place about a month ago and was employ ed in advertising a certain brand of mince meat. He stopped at the park hotel, where he met Maggie Ryan, a charming widow somewhat his senior. An intimacj sprang up between the two and Loveless fell deeply in love with Maggie. It seems his love was reciprocated by the fair widow until a few days ago when Maggie became tired of John and left for Bluffton, Ldyeless has been despondeut for the past few days but none suspected hi* intention*. The revolver used was thirty - two calaber and had the bullet went wlieie intended would have caused instant death. Loveless hail* from New York state and hi* mother wa* telegraph for Wednes- “ day morning. Latkr—Dr. Clark report* him a* im- , proving somewhat at the time of goin to . pres*. The Funnel Club. The Funnd Club met in their hall test Vednesday evening. When the Pre*!lent called the meeting to order thei vere only twenty three members preset vho answered the roll call. After the Journal had been read by th< ecretary the President arose and said h vished to address them upon the subject 0 he saloon license taw: “I attended th nesting of the city council last evei - in 4. said he, “and find there is a fight be ng made by the saloon keeper* to havt he license reduced. Now all respectablteople know this would injure our peopl* itiarge, and would give the saloon mote x>wer. Therefore I have prepared a petition protesting aga'nst the reduttkn >f the said license which I will present t« the city council at their meeting nex week, and I would like all in favor of m< sentiments to come forward and sign it.” President sat down took the petition out of a pigeon-hole on hi> leak ready for the signers. All was quit'or a moment, but at last a number in th oack part of the hall arose, and walkin, ip to the president’s desk nervous!, took the pen and signed it where the pre* 'dent showed him. Several more the came forward and then there wa* ager. iral stampede for the desk. All the men bers but three who kept their seats wer standing around the president dssk ready to sign, when everybody’* attention wacalled to the back part of the hall, when two of the three member* who bad no expressed their willingness to sign, weic naving a lively tussle. One, a small, dark complected fellow, threw a chair without a back, at a big red headed fellow, which jusi came close enough to knock a black clay pipe out of hi* mouth. The big fellow then made a dive for the small one, out fell over two benches, striking his head against a stove leg, and knocking it from under the stove, which toppled ar,, fell almost upon him. Luckily, there was not much fire in the stove, a* the club he* oecn a little short of wood and it wa* easily replaced. By thi* time the other nembers left the ’ president's desk and rushed back-to see what had caused the ■rouble. It took four men to hold the big fellow, while the little one had taken refuge behind the president. After awhile order was restored, and the president called the two men up to his Jesk where they stood looking daggers at , each other, “Now, I shall have to know the cause of this disturbance, said the president, “He said I could not write my name, and that is the reason I did not 1 ii 6 n the petition," said lhe little fell -w. He said 1 didn’t know my A, B, C,’s,,ar d that I could not tell one tobacco tag from mother, and cold not sign if I wanted to,” .aid the'big fellow. After investigating, the president tound that neither could write, so he told them to make their marks which they did, and walked back co their seat* a* proudly a* if they hau written the history of the U, ff. The rest laving signed, the president placed th> etition btek in tne pigeon-hole to 1 • ai» he ■ ext mec’tngof the city council.
