Waier Works. The necessity of better means of pr< tection from fire was „again repeated lanight in tbe burning of the barn on tl property of Mrs. David McNabb, i which addition to the loss of the bnri hay and feed, was the loss of a valuab .hone that Rev. Smith had in keepini While the loss on the barn did not ex ceed one hundred dollars, while the fee about fifteen dollars and the horse oi hundred and twenty-five dollars, but the* small losses amount to large ones, whe aggregated then some ofthem will lead i a large one some of thes days, when v are caught for seventy-five to a hundrr thousand dollar fire, then the necessit will dawn upon us. What we need an must have is water works. Let the council proceed at once tomal the necessary arrangements to give us tl water works for protection from fin When the street work that has been con menced is completed, let the work I postponed until the water works can I • put in ahd then we will be prepared i fight the fire. Money spent for cisten and fire engines is money thrown awa compared with the money invested i water works, and with the increase in tl as. essment of the property, there will I* no reed of any fears where the money t. build them is to coine frou and in a few years they will b« s. li sustaining, at lea*-t tha* is the rase iether towns. The building was insured in the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Co, for $150.00. The Iqs t will be about $250.00 Adams County Fair. Will we have a fair? All parties inter ested in the project are requested to mee at the Democrat office, on Saturday |t'ie 12th day of December, 1891, for the purpose of discussing the articles of association as they have been reported by the committee appointed for the purpose of preparing such articles and published through the papers. Let every one come prepared for the work; let an agriculture society be formed at this meeting and all the necessary steps taken to insure a good fair next year, which can be done easily by a concerted action of the farmers of our county, who must be the ones to take charge of the society and see that it is strictly an ag icultural association. The committee idesirous of meeting every one in favor of the enterprise. The Decatur Funnel Club. The Funnel Club held a meeting in their hall last Tuesday evening. When the president took the chair there were twenty-six members present. The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting, and alter they were approved, the president settled down in his chair as though he meant business. Just then a member, with a patch over his eye and an arm in a sling, arose and introduced the following bill: Resolved, that we, .the Decatur Funnel Club, do hereby express our utmost di«gust -for any party or parties who havethe audacity to advocate women’s rights and that we refuse to vote for any officer of any party who does so advocate. Several members were on the floor shouting for recognition, the instant he sat down. It was noticed that they were all batchelors,?and the president after some trouble quieted them when he said: “On this question I will only recognize mar-! ried men” and as none of that important class arose to object, the bill was put be fore the house and voted upon. The vote standing yea’s 19, nav’s 8. A curious coincident was here noted by a reporter that there were exactly 19 men and just 8 who had never been blessed with a better-half, present. The bill was carried and the member who introduced it stepped out in the hall to get a little fresh air. when he returned he was chewing cloves. After readinga letter from the president of the Lime Kiln-Club, which favored the cons ilidation of the two clubs, they ad ' Journed until Tuesday night at which time it will be decided whether the Lime Kiln Club and the Funnel Club will be consolidated.
