Office in Democrat Building, east side of Sec ond Street—ground floor. Tne Races. On last Thursday, Friday andJSaturday, the Decatur Driving Association gave a series of races at the fair grounds. Although the attendance was poor, the races were first-class and exciting. The uss< ciation proposes to give a seiiesof race next June and then hold a regular ta’r i> the fall. This is what Adams count, needs and everybody should -give then their support. Qn Friday the halt mile dash, two best in three was won by Lone Star, with Lady Forest second. Saturday was the big day and the races were splendid, and those present tho oughly enjoyed themselves. The first ra. ■ was the 2:30 pace with entries as Tom Allen, Red Bell, Startle and Ralpl Jones, jr. After some trouble they got away, with Tom Allen in the lead whici he kept\ntil they passed the first quarter when Red Bell gave a spurt and ran awaj from the other horses winning easily witl Startle 2nd, Ralph 3rd and Tom Allen 4th. The second heat was won by Ralph with Startle 2nd, Tom Allen 3rd and Red Bell 4th. Third heat, Tom Allen is’, Startle 2nd, Ralph 3rd and Red Bell 4th. In the fourth Red Bell took first, wit) Ralph 2nd, Tom Allen 3rd and Startle 4th. In the second heat Startle and Ralph collided, breaking two spokes out of Startle’s sulkey and just as they were well off, the hubs of Red Bell and Tom Allen’s sulkeys became locked, Red Bell’s driver being thrown out, and the horse becoming frightened, flew the track and ran down along the fence, kicking the sulkey all to pieces, notwithstanding this, King, her owner, hitched her to a cart and won the race. Time 3:11. The running race, a half mile dash, was easily won by Lady Forest, she taking the two first heats. The horses came in as follows in both heats: Lady Forrest Ist, Red Cloud 2nd, Lone Star 3rd and Minnie E 4th. Time 51 seconds. The usual number of fakirs were on the grounds and caught some of the boys for • their fits. Taking it all in al the races were inter estii.g and everybody enjoyed themselves and went away satisfied. Heed the Warning. It is not infrequently the case that itching pimples and irritating “cat boils’’ are the forerunners of larger boils, or the more serious carbuncles. Invariably nature puts out her danger signals, and they should be heeded at once. The pimples and little boils show that the blood is not in a good conditi »n and nature is trying to relieve ti.e system. A few doses of Swift’s Specific at this juncture will accomplish wonders. The eruption will be healed and the S 3 stem cleansed ot its impurities. The modern paraphrase of the old saying, “A stitch in time,” etc., is that “Timely stitches will save nine pairs of breech.” The modei n form has a touch of humor that does not modify the truth of it. In that vein, we may say that a course of Swift's Specific prevents ills terrific. Must SeM Cigars Direct From the Box. An attache of the internal revenue de partment drops this warning hint: “The enactments of the last Congress in regard to the sale of c'girs appear to be very im • perfectly understood by tobacconist and Others engaged in their sale and those •who are interested in the matter onght to study the new features of the law on the subject. For examp'e, a dealer who takes out a handful of cigars and lays them before a customer to choose from, or a saloonkeeper who brings a cigar on a plate or in a tumbler, as most of them . do, makes himself liable to a fine of SIOO and other disagreeable consequences besides. The government says: “Cigars must be sold to the customer direct from the properly stamped box.” We have published this notice before, but have been informed that some are violating the law. Height of Cruelty. Nervous women seldom receive the sympathy they deserve. While often the pictures of health, they are constantly all ing. To withhold sympathy from these unfortunates is the height of cruelty. They have a weak heart, causing shortness of b *eath, fluttering, pain in side, weak and hungry spe’ls, and finally swelling of ankles, oppression, choking, smothering and dropsy. Dr. Miles New Heart Cure is just, the thing for them. For their nervousness, headache, weakness, etc., his Restorative Nervine is unequaled. Fine treatise on “heart and nervous diseases'* and marvelous testimonials free. Sold and guaranteed by W. H. Nachtrieb. - Children Oryfsr Pitcher's Castoria.
Wabash Township Items. A little daughter of Aaron. Burley hat been very ill with scarlet fever but is now recovering. Several cases of scarlet fever are reported m this township. Some of them are mild, while a few are very severe. Mrs. Elsie Aspy left last Thursday for an extended visit with triends and relatives in the southern part of the state. Mrs. Andrew Gilson, of Rushville, returned home last Thursday after a pleasant three weeks visit with relatives and friends. ~ Several of our people attended the Centennial anniversary at Ft Recovery, O. They report a pleasant time and a large crowd of people. Little Johnny Miller was visiting friends a the country last week. He has so tar recovered from his injury as to be able tc walk about with the aid of crutches. , Our fartne s are busy harvesting their great crop of corn, and there are few farmers who are not building additions cribs in which to store their grain. The pleasant face of our Deputy Clerk Miller, is seen occasionally smiling among nis friends here. The Miller-Ford scrib. tn inks there is some attraction in this direction. A Mystery Explained. The papers con tain frequent notices of rich, pretty and educated girls eloping with negroes, tramps and coachmen. The well-known specialist, Dr. Franklin Milei, says all such girls are more or less hysterical, nervous, very impulsive, unbalanced; usually subject to headache, neur algia, sleeplessness, immoderate crying 01 laughing. These show a weak nervous system for which there is no remedy equal to Restorative Nervine. Trial bottles and a fine book, containing many marvelous cures, free at W. H. Nachtrieb’s, who also sells and guarantees Dr. Miles celebrated New Heart Cure, the finest of heart tonics. Cures fluttering, short breath, etc. Farmers and Their Mall. An organized effort is under way among farmers to secure from congress free mail delivery in the country. The Farmers’ Alliance, Patrons of Husbandry and other Orders are canvassing the matter. Letters are being written to congressmen in favor of the project and petitions.to congress for free delivery are being circulated in many parts of the country. Farmers assert that a daily mail delivery at their door will add perceptible to the money value of their farms, and will be worth still more because it will keep them in touch with markets and the outside world, and rob farm life of its isolation and monot my. The farmers are writing to agricultural press that this convenience would enable them quite generally to take a daily paper, as well as to subscribe for the local papers more liberally. In the American Agriculturist for November Postm ster-General Wannamaker states dtfinately, for the first time, that the experiment made by the postoffice de partment tor free delivery in farming districts shows that the increase in revenue more than pays all the increased expenses. Hebei eves that universal tree delivery would therefore be relf-sustaining. Rheumatism Can be Cured. AlthougHit has baffled our best physicians, it be permanently cured by the proper use of Hibbard’s Rheumatic Syrup, which cleanses the blood of all poisonous natter and induces a healthy action of the kidneys and liver. To secure the best vaults. Hibbard’s .Rheumatic and Liver Pills, and Strengthening and Rheumatic Plasters should be used in connection with the Sy:up. Sold bv W. H.
