Office in Democrat Building, east side of Second Street—ground floor. Tne New Tax Law. The new tax law is becoming better understood by the people, and the better they understand it the better they will like it, except some of 'he large corporations’ who have been paying tax on about onethird of the amount th*t they own, while the poor man and the one of moderate means has been beating the burden, but under the new law, the wealthy will be compelled to pay their share- We notice that the corporations of Marion county have been increased more than four millions of dollars under the new law, while the c< rporations all over the state will be affected the same way, thus increasing the valuation to such an amount that it will not be necessary to make the levy so high, and the large amount of increase in the valuation from those who heretofore dodged the tax law, will not only help to reduce the rate but will bring a revenue that will allow such a reduction of the rate that taxes ne<d be no higher than at tha. present time, and as necessary improvements have been made and paid tor, the rate should be reduced. So that but a few rears will elapse until the heavy part of the burden, in the way of taxation will be removed, and an amount levied no greater than will be necessary to meet the cui rent expenses of the state, county and township The school we must always have, and that at near the same figure we now have, for our schools must be sustained at anything like a fair rate, but'as fa-t as our Benevolent and other State institutions are paid for the State taxes will be reduced, and so will the county and town ship. A Fatal Mistake. Physicians make no more fatal mistake than when they inform patients that nervous heart troubles come from the stomach and are of little consequence. Dr. Miles, the noted Indiana specialist, has proven the contrary in his new book on heart disease, which may be had free at W. 11. i “Dog Days.” i The dog days are here, says an ex ! change. ’Jhe dog days last from the be- | ginning of juiv to August, 11. The popuI lar theory is that they are so called be--1 cause dogs then go mad; but the notion is - etymologically’ false, bes : des being untrue in tact. Dogs strange to say, aie less liable to rabies then -han at other times “Dog days” is really a translation from the Latin “dies canicnlaris”— the twenty days before and the twenty after the bel lacal rising (that is, appearance in the morning just before the sun) of the star Sirius, whom the Romans called “Canicula, or “little dog.” The ancients attributed a most malevolent influence to this stat—our “dog star”—and sacrificed a brown dog to it to app- a-e it* rage. If this were not done they thought that the sea would boil, the wine turn sour and the dogs begin to grow mad, the bile increase and all animals grow languid. It is unnec' ssary to say that in t’V c mrse of some ages Sirius will rise at midwinter instead of at midsummer. Perhaps some wiseacres, like thipse who are ready to believe in dog days and new moons chang ing the weather and similar impossibilities, will then give him credit for the frost and snow. « Electric Lights Responsible. The electric lights are responsible for the dea’h of bushels and billions ot flying things, the cups below the carbons being found aboslutely lull of th tn, while countless thousands die and tall to the ground. The impress’on that no amount of de struction can reduce the ins< ct plague is, of course, erroneous, and it will surprise us if there is not a percept ble diminution next season no matter how ma'y flytng nuisances are drawn in from 'lie country. The arc light is destined to play a very important part on nature as well as on animal life. In some parts of the city careful observat.on made last year proved that perpetual light grea'ly added vegetatation and also rtduced the dampness and ma'aria. Light is the natural enemy to disease in every shape, and experiments have clearly demonstrated that all the advan ages of a sun b. th are to be found in arc light rays. Factories lighted by electricity are blessed with a very much cleaner bill of health thin in the old coal oil and gas days. A Little Girl’s Experience in a Lighthouse. - . W. C. T. U. Notes. " 1 \ As advertised, a c vnty convention forthe purpose of reorganizing the county and electing officers, was held in the Presbyterian church on the Sth of the month ®ie time, occurring as it did, in the midst ot the fruit season was not favorable ‘nr a full attendance. The sessions, howeveP, were enjoyed by those who were there and the evening lecturer, Miss Ayers, a returned missionary- from China, had a fair audience who were delighted and instructed bv her addresses. Nine new 1 members were received into the Union. The following officers were elected for the county: President, Mrs. Dr. M. L. Holloway, Decatur; recording secretary, Mrs. Simison, Berne; cor. secretary, Mrs. Helen Blossom, Decatur; treasurer, Mrs. R. B. Allison, Decatur. These 'Officers, tog ther with the presidents of local Unions shall constitute an executive committee for the supervision of temperance work and the consolidation of temperance ser.timent and effort in the county. We trust that many new unions shall be the outgrow h of this new organization. There ought to be a Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in every village in the county. The W. C. T. U. is not a secret society, it is distinctively a woman’s society, it is inexpensive, any woman may become a member by signing the pledge, endorsing the constitution which does not interfere with .the religious or political views of any one, and by paying an annual membership fee of sixty cents, of which twenty-five cents are paid to the State Union and ten cents to the county The object of the organization is to educate public sentiment up to the standard of total abstanance, train the young, save the fallen, and secure the legal prohibition and complete banishment of the liquor traffic. Let me ask every woman who has read the above object of the Union to read it again and ask herself if she does not wish to join her heart and hand in so worthy an object. Think what the complete banishment of the liquor traffic would mean for you and yours, for your neighbors and their children, and for the coming generations, and by becoming a member of a Union you can help educate public sentiment. You can, help train the young in temperance principles, and vour sons and daughters can become workers in this reform movement. There are enough intelligent thinking women in every neighborhood to get together and talk this matter over and who will make good officers for a local Union. Anyone wishing further information can address Mrs. Helen Blossom, cor. secretary, Decatur, who will take pleasure in answe r ing an> questions pertaining to the organization or its work. The dinner and lunch given by the ladies of the W. C. T. U. on the 4th netted them $24.00. Peterson Items. J. H Lenhart and wife were visiting relatives east of Decatur the latter part of last week.
