Remember the time and everybody come. Frank Davis, our old friend butcher, has at last concluded to do something for his country, as he is completing a nige residence on his little farm, one mile west of Monroe. Get tire bells and old titj pans ready—it’s business, boys. There is another invisible bubble afloat in the air around Monroe that will soon burst. Then, oh, then, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and the fathers and mothers will cry jiloud,, why was it that prompted us that our sons and daughters were safe in the society of our neighbors, but alas, too late, the young man. Wednesday night of last week, Mr. John Hendricks and family, one and a half miles southeast of Monroe, were pleasantly reminded by their many friends that John had arrived at a very respectable age, fifty-two. They were informed that he had passed the corner. The crowd came in broken columns. ’ The first to arrive were rather early, through a misunderstanding of course, excuses were made and accepted, about eight o’clock, wagons, buggies and carts began to roll up laden with old triends, young gentlemen and ladies from far and near and continued to come untilten.o’clock. Harry Gould was employed to manufacture the ice cream which was very palitable, while the friends presented John with a fine cake which well supplied the large crowd of near seventy persons, who partook of the cream and cake to. their heart’s content. There were many social features displayed that made the a flair a success. The parlor was filled with young ladies and gentlemen, full of fun and sport, which made the occasion more pleasant, and there has not been a jnote pleasant, agreeably and social gathering ibi years, if ever in this community. All were highly pleased with meeting of old friends, and when about to depart for their homes they were respectfully invited to return some future time by Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks. Long may they live to enjoy many such occasions. For over Fifty Years. It has been said that skijlful advertising will accomplish wonders, and this is partly true, for it is no uncommon thing to see various nostrums achieve a brief notoriety in this way, But they do not outlast. the notices <hat.herald them. Thus it is that the mercurial and potash remedies are constantly appearing before the public in new disguises. Advertising, however, will not account for the popularity that S. S. S. has enjoyed for fifty '. ears, nor for the fact that it has become a household remedy; nor will advertising account fur the thousands of testimonials that the people have given in its behalf. Only the most substantial merit can account for the estimation in which this wonderful medicine is held. (Geneva Items. Hon. S. W. Hale was <t Decatur on last Tuesday, M. J. ' « On entering the trimming department of Dunbar’s carriage works recently, we noticed a variety ot placards on the walls which would be material for thought for many visiting the place. Among them are mentioned: “Welcome,” “Be Polite,” “You can do it if you will,” “If at first you don’t succeed, try again and do right.” • The mottoes are all wholesome, did we have a disposition to digest them, but this is not all we seen there, on looking around we notice material in abundance for the various styles of vehicles that are being manufactured here in first-class woykmanship. Two hands are working in this department. Near three thousand dollars has been the sale out of these shops since spring opened, while the demand continues to exceed the capacity. The head of the government was startled one week ago last Sabbath by Baby McKee giving the alarm that he had discovered a sea serpent while playing on a little pile of sand, a tremendous excitement was caused, and re-enforced by . the ladies, when they proceeded to the attack, and which proved to be a harmless little garter snake, somewhere between five and Twenty-two inches long, he was quickly dispatched by the heel of the gov ernment. The story of Washington and . his little hatchet, can now be taken from oft the files, and little Ben’s snake story take the place, for it is written that the heel of the woman shall bruise the serpent’s head, and the small man with the big hat, at the White House, did kill the little reptile with his little heel. < Good Looks.
