gemacrai JtgBLACKH UHiN, Proprietor. EItIDAY, JUNE 2(i, 181)1. Among the most prominent plank in the Ohio Republican platform is the one reaffirming the party’s devotion to the doctrines of the protective system, and especially the McKinley bill. This could not have been avoided considering the candidate who was placed in nomination and would be forced by the Democrats to make the tight on the tariff issue. With the McKinley bill for the main issue. The Second plank reveals the fact that they have not forgotten the election of last November when they wore completely routed. In it they decldre for the necessity of protection and promoting agriculture in all its departments, also the rights of labor and laborers is declared to be one of the first duties of a government. While the tariff and labor plank directly antagonize each other, they depend upon their power to gull the voters again as they have so frequently done in the past by promises of the future, when they will be able to give them all “forty acres of land and a mule.” Then comes the plank to catch the wool growers, wherein they demand protection for the wool grower equal to the most favored manufacturer, this is made with the llattering notice that they think ere long that the American wool grower will supply all the wool that is needed for use in this country. This is expected to alleviate aft the pain of the Ohio wool growers. While it has been clearly demonstrated that there is no protection for the wool grower of this country, that the grades of wool of which the most is used in American manufactories is- not and can not be produced in the United States, while land remains'at its present price and labor at the price that it commands. On the free coinage question they straddle the question and attempt to cater to the gold bugs of the East in the declaration that “gold and silver should form the circulating medium” and that by the last Republican congress an act was passed declaring that all silver mined iff the United States should be added to the currency, thus intending to catch the tree coinage men. Jn the sixth plank they set up the howl that emigration must be curtailed by the United States, and that it must be prohibited from certain countries for fear of this country. In the ninth plank they very gently indorse President Harrison, but failed to tender him anything that may be in the way of any other man. So far as the platform reveals the policy of the party it is McKinleyism through and through, and if the party will stand by them ln t* llß campaign, then they can feel assured that their battle cry of high protection may help then in 1892, but if they fail in this campaign in Ohio, then they will be in shape to cast around for something else on which to strand their boat. The blowout of the ah ti Harrison men at Indianapolis, were principally of that class who were disappointed in the hunt of an office, and are generally small men in politics. The men who can raise tour fttrardred thousand dollars for campaign purposes, are the bosses in the g. o. p. and with plenty of boodle and whiskey they soon whip in the kickers so that they keep quiet and vote the ticket dictated by the boodle gang of which they are the suppliant tools. The will of the late Albert Pike, of Little Rock, Ark., transfers all his property that was seized.by Un cle Sam, during the war as follows: “The moneys in the treasury of the United States arising from the sale under process of confiscation of his property in Little Rock, $1,950, he wills to the United States.” That they may have an honest title thereto and no longer hold them as the proceeds of plundering undfcr the form of law, and also the indebtedness of the United States to me for four horses lost by me in the military service of the United States In Mexico.
HOUG ! ON THE V.'.llMEll. There can n<> longer be a doubt that in the near future the commercial nation* »f Europe will retaliate ■upon the I’nited Slates for the policy of trade prohibition known as McKinleyism. Already Germatty, Austria, 1! angary, Italy and Switzerland have formed a zollvt rein, the details of which are not made public, but which, it is certain, are hostile to the interests of Americans. Nor can it be .much doubted that the passage of the McKinley bill hastened, if it did not originate, the formation of this zoilyerein. It would be surprising if the dictators of our protective system were well pleased with this European retaliation—sought it, in fact, for it serves them a very good turn. The chief beneficiaries of the protective tariff in America are the manufac turers, and anything that tends to give them an exclusive market is, of course, vastly to their advantage. If Germany’s manufactures be kept from the people of the United States so much the be’tter for them. But how about tho Farmer? What effect will European retaliation have upon him? It will be simply ruinous. If Europe refuses to purchase his products, where will he find a market? Not in Brazil, where we have “reciprocity,” for Brazil produces a surplus of farm products which she can lay down in the market of the United States cheaper than the same products can be raised by our own farmers. Nor will the manufacturing population furnish him a market, for he raises much more than that population requires. The fact is he will have no market.at all for his surplus and it will rot on the ground. It is idle to say that Europe must have our farm products—our wheat and corn and hogs. The fields of Hungary and Russia and India will supply their own needs and those of Europe too if the effort be made, and our own stupid policy of exclusion will force that efforts in the near future. Baron Seiman pointed this out the other day and economists the world over have long its possibility. The prospect is anything but a cheering one for the American farmer. European retaliation means eventual peonage for him. With no outside worker the manufacturer will not only dictate to him the price at which he shall buy what he needs but the price at ■which he shall sell what he produces. Between the upper and the nether mill stone the farmer will be ground out of all semblance to an independent American citizen.—lndianapolis Sentinel. Mr. Foster is confronted with an empty treasury. There is something that is not going to happen in the future, but now, cannot pay its current expenses because the billion dollar congress started in for a wholesale robberry of the people and succeeded perfectly in committing it. The deficit on the 19th, of this month was $91,000; it may be made up by the first of July and it may not. It would be much larger than that but for the fact that the public buildings for which appropriations were made have not been pressed, and the monies appropriated to pay war claims have been retained in the treasury. From recent developments in the wrecking of the Philadelphia banks it looks as though there may have been a certain amount of boodle somewhere in the cabinet of the Administration. While it may be covered up to some extent by whitewashing, yet the facts will remain and they may be fully developed, when some of the late bank officials find themselves behind the bars. But one’thing will prevent it, and that is the promise to them of immediate relief in the way of a partner. There is nothing else that will save the truth from coming to the surface. The tin-plate men who were going to commence the the manufacture of tin-plate by the Ist of July will have u> hump themselves to get qut enough for a tin cup by the time the campaign closes.
With a depleted treasury the secretary talks of redeeming bonds of the United States, that is the four percent bonds that are due next September. This is done in onlerto keep the taxpayers at large in the dark for fear the truth may be a slap at the party of the billion dollar congress, the one that furn ished him with the position he now fills. While the tact is that if bonds are redeemed this year by the government officials it will be like some men paying their debts by giving another bond on a long time for the one due, while be able to reduce the interest below tour per cent, that is the only way for them to redeem the bonds. Just as Secretary Foster indicated in his New York speech when he said that the maturing bonds could be extended at a very liberal rate of interest. The gigantic steals that the billion dollar congress of Reed’s fastened upon the people not only robbed them of the vast amount of one million dollars a day that are constantly pouring into the treasury of the United States, but also of the fifty million dollars of surplus. The locating of the creamery northeast of the city insures the graveling of that road. The same enterprise that put the creamery on its feet will see that the road is graveled.
