The famous mandamus proceedings which Editor Ashcraft, of the Journal, says lie is not backing up with words of encouagement and money, was still cn trial Monday morning. Ashcraft was a wildness for the plaintiff in the case. He took the witness stand, crossed his spider like legs, roached back his auburn locks, drew down his eyebrows and looked wise very much so. Judge Bobo, counsel for the plaintiff asked him several questions, which he very readily answered, and he was turned over to the defendants’ counsel who interrogated him upon what he knew about the facts in the case. He turned ashen pale when the questions were put to him, and would ‘hum and haw around in a manner that would put to shartie a school boy who was making his firs* attempt at speaking “Mary had a little Jamb,” etc. He testified that hg was taking no part in the matter whatever, and then again testified under oath that he with two others went to see a‘ lawyer about the case, but the lawyer refused, saying there was nothing in the case. Again he testified that he was not employed as one of the counsel in the case, but that he merely at the suggestion of one of the parties looked up and read all the documents to see that they were all right. “I have no interest whatever in the case.” He knew nothing for sure about who commenced the proceedings or anything else in particular. He would squirm and wriggle around in his chair under the questions fired at him by the attorney worse than a thousand-legged worm. At one time during the examina tion he assayed to laugh, but it was a very sickly attempt and sounded more like “Marks” in that old chestnut, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” He made a first class witnesss for the one side, which he said he was not pushing, but on the other he knew nothing, because he went to see a lawyer who said there was nothing in it. The becret of buccess. W. H. Nachtrieb, druggist, believes that the secret of success is perseverance. Therefore he persists in keeping the finest line of perfumeries, toilet articles, cosmetics, drugs and chemicals on the market. He especially invites all persons who have palpitation short breath, weak or hungry spells, pain in side or shoulder, oppression, night, mare dry cough, smothering, dropsy or heart disease to try Dr. Miles’ New Heart Cure, before it is too late. It has the largest sale'of any similar rem&fly. Fine book of testimonials free. Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine is unsurpassed for sleeplessness, headache, fits, etc., and it contains no opiates. 1 he Book Trust Knocked (Jut. A CARD TO THE PG’ALIC. Some sjx months ago we began the publication ot our rfeprint of the'famous Encyclopaedia Britannica in 25 volumes, which we issued at $1.50 per volume. The price of the English edition always has been and still is SB.OO per volume, and the Scribner edition $5.00 per volume in the cheapest binding. That the public appreciate so great a bargain is shown by the fact that 'ever half a million volumes of this reprint have been sold in less than six months. This elegant new edition we still offer at the same price, $1.50 per volume. This is the greatest bargain ever known in books. Better still we will deliver the set complete on small easy payments, to suit the convenience of customers.. •Remember this is not an abridgement, but the great Edinburgh ninth edition, reproduced page for page With important articles on American subjects rewritten to date by eminent American authors, and new._oiaps, later and better than in any other edition. 3 Special Offer.—We claim that our reprint compares favorably with the high priced editions in every respect, and in respect to maps, and strength and beauty of bindings is superior to them. In order that this claim may be tested by a personal inspection we make the follow proposition: We will furnish volume I, at 6octs, —a fraction of actual cost—if sent by express. Add 4<jcts postage if sent by mail. Amounts paid for volume I, will be credited on price of set when ordered. R. S. Peale & Co., 315-321 Wabash Ave , Chicago. The World Grows. Noah Webster would not know his old dictionary in the perfection it has attained in the hands of modern scholars. The world, grows, however, and dictionaries with it, so that a cheap reprint of the 44 years old “original” Webster is worth about as much as an old almanac. Web • ster’s International Dictionary, the recent successor of the latest and still copyrighted “Unabridged,” is the best work of its kind ever published, and, welj used in a family will be of more value to the memben thereof than many timet its cost laid up ir money., ■ - -l '<■ ■ - ’ ‘ fa
“Tho Never Sweats.” Bricklaying commerced on the Kleinhenz & Mayer building Monday morning, and while there were only nine or ten workmen engaged there were probably fifty lookers-on. A few of these were business men looking at the work, .while there was another class present who are Kilt edged members of the “Never Sweats.” They were not there for work nor to see what kind of work was being done, but merely to kill time. Some of these men, bums would be a little more appropriate, are too infernal lazy to work when it is offered them, and would rather stand around on the street corners while their wives and mothers take in washing and do housecleaning to clothe and feed their carcasses. If there is one thing more despicable than another it is for able bodied men in the prime of life to be doing nothing when work is plenty. At the present lime there is plenty of work to be had on the different improvements being made in the city, and no one should be idle. We will admit that during the past winter when the roads were almost impassable and the factories and other works were unable to be in operation that work was very slack, but now that they are all run ning, with a few exceptions, there is no possible excuse for men being idle the biggest portion of their time. It is understood that the City Council will ask the County Commissioners at their session in June to build a high fence for the purpose of opening a place for these street loafers and tramps to crack stone in. It should be granted and, put in force at once. The “Never Sweats”,will please take notice that the Democrat is after them and intends to make it mighty unpleasant for them in the sweet-by-and-by. The expose will open up so that all may be branded and snaked in by the officers of the city. Our advice is in two words: “Hunt Work.” A Husband’s Mistake. Husbands too often permit wives, and parents their children, to suffer from headache; dizziness, neuralgia, sleeplessness, fits, nervousness, when by the use of Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine such serious results could easily be prevented. Druggists everywhere say it gives universal satisfaction, and has an immense sale. Woodworth & Co., of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Snow & Cd., of Syracuse, N. Y.; J. C. Wolf, Hillsdale, Mich.; and hundreds of others say “it is the greatest "seller they ever knew.” It contains no opiates. 1 rial bottles and fine book on nervous diseases, free at W. H. Nachtrieb’s. F. While quite young she emigrated with her parents to Fayette County, Ohio, and in 1832 was married to Zachariah Smith, a native of the same county. They lived in Ohio about three years after their marriage, and in 1836 moved to Adams county, Indiana, and settled in St. Marys township. Her husband was drowned in the St. Marys river July 7, 1544. He left a family of nine children the youngest of which was seven months old. All but one survive the mother. She has sixty-two grand-child-children and forty six great-grandchildren, forty-seven of the grand children are still living. The mother was left in the wilderness with a large family to care for, but with tireless hands she went bravely on. Acre by acre was cleared until their farm was under good cultivation. Her success has been noble, as is attested by the esteem in which she is held in the county. The subject was converted to the Christian faith quite early in life and has since been an earnest worker in.the M. E. church and it was with great regret to her that she had not been able to attend church the past three years. Her labors have been crowned with glory; her hands have held the distaff, and the reward awaits her at the gate. * # * Bosse’s Mountain halve. From Bad to Worse. The ordinary treatment of contagious blood poisoning is to drive one poison ‘ from the system by introducing another. The result in most cases, has been that which usually follows a leap from the fry-ing-pan into the fire. To put it mildly, mercurial and other mineral poisonings have disadvantages which are hardly less serious than contagious blood poison. In either case the system is wrecked; and yet there is no reason why humanity should suffer. It is the office of S. S. S.to cure contagious blood poisoning. For that disease the medicine is surely a specific. And it is also its office to cure mercurial and other mineral poisoning. In short, S. S. S. is the great Hood purifier. It de stroys the germs of the contagious disease, and expels from thigksystem all forms of mineral poisoning, it restores health and strength io the sufferer. Several persons were baptised in the St. Marys river last Sunday at this place. Notice.
