Office in Democrat Building, east side of Second Street—ground floor. Communicated. Editor Democrat;-—ln the Democrat of the 10th inst., a writer speaking of Daniel’s prayer intimates that he retired to his chamber for secrecy. I think this view erroneous, as the text adds as he did aforetime, signifying custom. Danie foresaw the conspiracy going on against him, but took no means to thwart it, he simply committed himself to God and left the issue to his Providence. He did not leave the empire on pretended business, or perform his devotions with more than ordinary secrecy, but when he knew that the writing was signed he went into his house, and his windows being open in his chamber towards Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day and prayed, and gave thanks before his God as he did aforetime. The result of this experience of Daniel is that another proclamation goes out throughout the empire, setting forth the character of the true God in fine terms, ist. He is the living God, all others are dead. 2nd. He Js steadfast for ever, all others change, 3rd He has a kingdom for he made and governs all. 4th His * kingdom shall not be destroyed, all others come to an end. sth His dominion is without end, no human power can prevail against it. 6th. He delivereth those who are in bondage. 7th. He rescueth his servants from their enemies when call upon him for help. Bth He worketh wonders in the heavens and signs upon the earth. 9th. And to complete all, He hath delivered Qaniel, giving before our own eyes the fullest proof of his power and goodness in rescuing from the power of the lions. How excellent, a eulogium is this on the great God and his faithful servant. I see no virtue in arguing such questions as to whether Daniel prayed with his face toward Jerusalem, except as they have a tendancy to make people more careful bible students. While the scripture does not state that Daniel prayed with his face toward Jerusalem yet we find that Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple special blessings are invoked on those who should pray with their faces toward Jerusalem and the temple. See Ist Kings 8, 35, 38, 42, 44, 48, etc. We also find in Psalms 5,7, that David says, “And in thy "ear will I worship toward thy holy temple.” Also Jonah intimates the custom of looking toward the temple while praying for mercy when he says, “I am cast out of thy sight, yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.” From these circumstances we infer that there is a special significance in the fact that Daniel’s windows were open towards Jerusalem. I think it a good plan to quote scripture as it is and not claim that the bible says that Elijah went to heaven in a chariot of fire, or that Absalom was hung in the oak by his hair, or of two evils choose (the least, or that the first day of the week is the Christian Sabbath. John Elzey, Monroe, Ind. Startling Facts. The American people are rapidly becoming a race of nervous'wrecks, and the » following suggests the best remedy: Alphdnso Hempfling, of Butler, Pa., swears that when his son was speechless from St. Vitus dance, Dr. Miles’ great Restorative Nervine cured him. Mrs. J. R. Miller, of Valparaiso, and J. D. Taylor, of Logansport, Ind., each gained twenty pounds from taking it. Mrs. H. A. Gardner, of Vistula Ind., was cured of forty to fifty convulsions a day, and tnuch headache, dizziness, backache and nervous prostration by one bottle. Trial bottles and fine book of marvelous cures, free at W. H. Nachtrieb’s, who recommends and guarantees this unequaled remedy. Wedding Bells. Married by the writer, at the residence of Mr. Jonathan Shull, the groom’s father, on April sth, 1891, Mr. Cadmus Shull to Miss Lizzie Tyndall. Miss Tyndall was a former resident of Adams county, and is a half sister of Mr; J. W. Tyndall, county surveyor of Adams county, and also of Prof. Nelson Tyndall, principal ot the Decatur Ward schools. Mr. Shull » took one very commendable precaution of getting a home before getting a wife, and consequently the happy couple will henceforth be “at home” 10 their friends on the farm formerly owned by Postmaster Abels. Some very valuable presents were v made them, and the well wishes of the neighborhood are theirs. W. W. Harris, Pastor Church of Christ, St. Joe. Hucklen’s Arnica halve. 1 he Book Trust Knocked Out. A CARD TO THE PUALIC. Some six months ago we began the publication of our reprint of the famous Encyclopaedia Britannica in 25 volumes, which we issued at $1.50 per volume. The price of the English edition always has been and still is SB.OO per volume, and the Scribner edition $5.00 per volume in the cheapest binding. That the public appreciate so great a bargain is shown by the fact that over half a million volumes of this reprint have been sold m less than six months. This elegant new edition we still offer at the same price, $l5O per volume. This is the greatest bargain ever known in books. Better still we will deliver the set complete on small easy payments, to suit the convenience of customers. Remembs this is not an abridgement but the great Edinburgh ninth edition, reproduced page for page with important articles on American subjects rewritten to date by eminent American authors, and new maps, later and better than in any other Special Offer.— We claim that our reprint compares favorably with the high priced editions in every respect, and in respect to maps, and strength and beauty of bindings is superior to them. In order that this claim may be tested by a personal inspection we make the follow proposition: We. will furnish volume I, at 6octs, —a fraction of actual cost-r-if sent by express. Add 4bcts postage if sent by mail. Amounts paid for volume I, will be credited on price of set when ordered. ‘.R. S. Peale & Co., 315-321 Wabksh Ave., Chicago. Sudden Deaths. Watkins, of Celina, Ohio, is visiting friends at this place. A word to one or two of our young ladies of sweet sixteen. It is not always the most talkative people that get on best in society. Try to be a little less selfconscious and you will get on better. Do not despair, some one will find out your attractive side before long, and you will receive the attention you crave. A Phenomenon at Van Wert. Van Wert, Ohio, July 11, 1889. Gents:—This is to certify that I had what is called sciatic rheumatism so badly that I was drawn all over to one side. My hip sank in so that you could lay your hand in the cavity, and I could do no work for over a year. I tried some of the best physicians and did almost everything I could hear or think of, but nothing did me any good until I purchased a bottle of Hibbard's Rheumatic Syrup pf Hines Sf Son, druggists, Van Wert, Ohio. Four bottles cured me and I have never had rheumatism since. Albert King. We certify to the above testimonial. Hines & Son, druggists. Sold by W. H. Nachtneb. Rheumatism Can be Lured. Although it has baffled our best physicians, it can be permanently cured by the proper use of Hibbard’s Rheumatic Syrup, which cleanses the blood of all poisonous matter and induces a healtjiy qctipn pf the kidneys and livpr.
