Scandalous Talk. —_ i ■ Some three menths ago there came to Berne a certain young man in the guise of a gentlemah and found employment at P. W. Smith’s saw mill, and white at a social gathering made the acquaintance of a young lady whom he afterward called on at her place of residence. After he had called on hej for some time and tiring of her he began paying attention to another lady in the same neighborhood, and at the same time was reporting a scandalous and disgraceful talk on the first lady in question and resting the blame on others. Talk that no one but a man of no principle would be guilty of saying. Talk that would bring nothing but disgrace and shame to the one if listened to by others. The talk he succeeded in, as he spared neither time or tongue in the attempt, but as for the community relying on any of his gossip we think he failed, and his late talk and ac tions have proven that he has told nothing but an untruth from beginning to end. By so talking and leaving thit place, which he has taking great pains in doing, in doing so he thought he would smooth over a somewhat serious series of troubles - • ■ . . S' he had fallen into with some of the fair sex at a small town in our neighboring state on the east. The party here has friends to help in this and if he attempts to return the authorities will settle the matter in a s -tisfactory manner with him. The Terrible Indian War! Now in progress, excites universal attention, and a history of the thrilling events connected with it will be eagerly sought after. The enterprising publishers, S. S. Scranton & Co., Hartford, gGonn., have in preparation and will issue as soon as possible after the decisive battle, a work of about 500 pages, by W. P'letcher Johnson, author of “Johnstown Flood,” giving a graphic sketch of Sitting Bull, the MedicineJjMan, and the leading chiefs, and a complete richly illustrated history of the whole terrific struggle. Agents should write at once to the publishers, who give liberal terms and pay freight. Divorces in Indiana. Reports received by the chief of the State Bureau of Statistics from 77 counties, show 1,721 divorces granted in Indiana the past year. Estimating the entire state on this basis would give a total of 2,056, as against 1,623 f° r ’BB9 Congress in 1887 male an appropriation for the collections of divorce statistics in all the states of the Union. The records in Indiana for the past twenty-four years show a total of 32,232 divorces. During the past five years the divorces have been over ten percent of the marriages. The report of the chief of the statistical Bureau recommends legislation preventing criminals, paupers and feeble minded persona from marrying, and urges that more stringent laws govern marriages and divorces are required in Indiana. We understand that the Piohibition party advocates that the great national reform of the United States can only be accomplished by a non-sectional party, one that knows no north, no south, no east, no west, and that the Prohioition party is the only one that can succeed in this reform. The Prohibition party is doing a good work as far as it goes, but when she tries to lead and compete with Democ racy she is likely to get into the “soup’’ and meet a similar fate that the once happy and prosperous but now crest fallen and woe-begotten Republican party has met.
