IECATUR DEMOCRAT. IY ROTH <k CUMMINS. ay, October 26. .883. ints on Diphtheria. if Drs. Freeman & Boyers, ) Oct. 24th, 1883. ) Decatur, Indiana, is nothing, perhaps, that ingage the attention of the t large more than the preservthe health of the people, and ve several cases of diphtheria _.ty, a few hints as to the preof the spread of the di.roaro Kts symptoms may be ■ of value to the general reader. Eiphtheria is thought to have prerd even before the time of Ilippoese but d.es not seem to have been ■rstood until 1821-26, when Breau, of Tours, France, described it and gave it the name it ■ bears, but as with the appellation ESnan . diseases it is not an exhaus- ■ tiann' as it applies more < j<’ial ■o its local characteristics. Hit different, times diphtheria has ■urged Syria, Egypt, England. \nienca and other countries, mr ugn all these as fire, at times but a slumbering S|, at others breaking out as a mighdestroying nearly all ■thin its grasp. is an acute, febrile, specific, eondisease, decidedly contaand epidemic, known by psendoexudations upon mucous beginning most frequently in ■ sauces, (back of the tongue.) but ■y appear also upon any cutanec us swrfaee. Diphtheria is essen Kly a disease of childhood not fre found in adults and rarely in ■ve had the disease more readily than ■ those who never had an attack of it. ■Defective sewerage, decomposing ■Retable and animal matter, impure water, and improper food inits malignancy and favor its disIsion. Yet we find it in its most ma;nant form among th* strong and in ose who are very wholesomely silted, which is due in most instances a want of preventive measures. It influenced but little by seasons or mates, as it has prevailed in its )rst forms in all seasons of the year Hnd in all climates. B The incipiency is not a true index K to how a case may terminate, as it Sequent !v happens that apparently Bght attacks result fatally, hence the Kitlook for recovery of diphtheria is ■ways grave, the greatest death rate Being of children, and varying from Kie extremes of 3 per cent, to 33 per ■ent. ■ The germs or bacteria of diphtheria ■re found especially in the secretions End excretions of the body and in the Eery breath of the diphtheritic patient End contaminates the surrounding atfeosphere. The premonitory symptoms Ks diphtheria are general lassitude End uneasiness, chilliness, stiffness of ■the neck, tenderness about the angle Es the jaw, slight sore throat, anorexia End thirst, then in twelve to thirty-six [hours the exudation appears, fever tires, cervical glands are enlarged, pain En the neck, cars limbs and loins, [painful deglutition, loss of strength, Eiiadache, furred tongue, constipation, iterterous breathing, etc., but the greater number of these symptoms are asheicd in abruptly and aggravated, requiring the patient to go to bed at the onset of the attack. Thecolorof the diphtheritic exudation is gray white, slightly yellow, or even dark jrown, depending upon the stage and gravity of the attack. High fever, rapidly developed exudation, and much depression of the vital powers are bad pmens. Jn order to prevent the spread 0 the disease, isolation of the patient is of the greatest importance, as it not only prevents its spread but dilutes the poison in the air and thus benefits the patient. All things that are not of a real necessity should be removed from the room of the patient. Plenty of fresh air without currents should be let into the room, and everything for the coinfort of the patient should be done. Scrupulous cleanliness in every particular should be rigidly enforced, the excrement, sputum and excretions should be removed from the room at once and thoroughly disinfected. All the excrements from the body, even the sputum, should be most thoroughly disinfected with some such purifier as sulphate of iron or carbolic acid and thrown into privies. And just here it .is well to remark that the germs of I diphtheria, scarlet fever and typhoid 1 fever have been known to reprouuce disease each of its own kind after the germa had lain in the ground or collected in the the clinks and crevices lof houses from two to four years, and even much longer, and it behooves every person to see stiictly that no dejections be allowed to be thrown about the yard or on the garden, as these germs are very liable to find their way into water that is drank, food that is eaten, or by contact with any part of the broken cutaneous surface of the body or by inhalation, and thus be reproduced and at times have caused fear, ful epidemics. We have well authenticated cases of diphtheria, scarlet fever and typhoid fever, which have been traced through the milk of cows, the milk having been impregnated with the poisonous germs by being diluted with water that bad flewn from pools or str-ams into which the dejections of patients eufferiag from these maladies had been thrown, and even milk from cows drinking water, contaminated thus, is said to contain germs enough to reproducr the disease each after its own kind. Diphtheria is ccnveycd from one person to another, in addition to the ways stated above,by woolen and fur clothing and by the hair. Kissing patients having diphtheria is a most dangerous practice, as the germs of the disease are brought in contact with the lips and is thus readily carried into the system. 1 know of a verysad case which occurred in one of our »aste*n statas of au only sister kissing her beloved brother, who was in the agonies of death with diphtheria. She thus contracted the disease and in less than one week died also. Quite a number of able physicians
