THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT BY ROTH * CUMMINS. Friday, October 19, 883. A sorrowful day for the Rads when Ohio spoke. Were you at the ratification meeting on last Saturday? As Ohio goes so goes all the states of the Union in 1884. The Democracy has but one sentiment and that is, turn out the rascals. Adams County Ratifies, On last Saturday night an enthusiastic crowd of the Adams county Democracy met at the court house for the purpose of ratifying over the glorious results of the Ohio election. Although the evening was very disagreeable yet the invincable Democracy turned out to a man and by eight o’clock in the evening the court house was well filled. After listening to some excellent music from the Odd Fellow s Band the meeting was organized by the election of his Hon, Mayor Dent as chairman. Mr. Dent, in a few well timed remarks stated the purpose of the occasion and then called out the fighting editor on the Democrat. Judge Bobo next joined in the general joy who in substance said : “It gives me sincere pleasure to meet with you, my old neighbors and friends to-night, to ratify in this county over the significant victory for the Democrats in the State of Ohio. I say it gives me pleasure and for reason which I will briefly state to you. Pleasure, because the victory in Ohio says to every Democrat, that it is a time for him to plume himself, for the Democracy was holding the Fort and that the artillery of honesty and reform has and will break the serried ranks of the “Grand Old Party," who have been for years so intoxicated with power and authority as to imagine they were invulnerable. Pleasure, because it promises a victory to the Democrats in 1884 that will give to the whole country a permanent and an unbroken peace. And since, it is the purpose of every Democrat in old Adams to rally under the Democratic banner. It is right and proper that we rejoice to night and still assist tne ball in rolling on to victory. Pleasure, because it means success, not only in the way of our next President, but it means that the Democratic party will not enter the next contest with a heavy heart, but determined to give a battle full of life, of activity, energy, zeal and confidence of success. A success of ths Democratic party means economy in the public expenditures, lightening taxation and a return to the halcyon days of the Republic, when the teachings and constitutional doctrkis of the Democratic party had control of this Government.” Here the Judge criticised the Republican party in vivid term 3 over the fact that their motto was anything and everything to win. That for years back the popular vote of this country was Democratic and had it not been for fraud and perjury they would have had control of the Government long ago. The speech short as it was, con tained many excellent suggestions and was highly received. E. A. Coverdale, Esq., was then loudly called for by the audience and for the space of fifteen minutes he portrayed the rise, growth and the indications of decay of the Republican party in a manner that carried conviction to all present. The meeting was a grand success, and from the outlook at present you can set old Adams down for 1500 in the next election. HERNE ITEMS. Please excuse me, I have company. Watch for his “ad” in the Democrat next week.
A Lie. The other evening as our scribe was walking up street he over heard one of our young men make the expression -that the world owes me a living. ' We thought to ourselves that this old saying was as mean as it is old and bears upon its face a contemptible falsehood. It is a fact that as aoon as a boy leaves school and looks about to see what he shall do next, he is very likely to be told by some unwise persons, “The world owes you a living.' This probably strikes him as being a very wise remark, and tbs boy says to himself: “If it is true that the world owes me a living, then I’ll be all right. He finds a place and goes to work manfully; bat after awhile he concludes that there-is no fun in it, and he stops to toniider: “If the world owes me a living, why should I trouble myself ? Let the world pay its debt to me.” Suddenly he loses his place and has nothing to do. He is surprised, and wonders why the world does not give him his due. “A nice bed, warm clothes, and regular dinners are good things, and he ought to have them. The world owes them to me, and if I do not get them I've been cheated out of my rights.” At one time this country was a wilderness, where no man oould live, save by fighting the wild beasts. Some one chased away the bears and wolves, cut down the forests, laid out roads, built towns and dug canals. Somebody spent vast sums of money In constructing railroads, steamboats, docks, lighthouses, schools, libraries, and all the fine things you enjoy so freely. More than this, somebody pays the policeman, the fireman, the soldier, the sailor, the light-house keeper, and schoolmaster. From the day you were born your father and mother have fed. sheltered, and clothed you. ft has cost you nothing. None of these great public works, roads, canals, towns, navies, and armies cost you anything. How can you say the world owes you a living? Is it not you vho are in debt? What has a boy done to deserve all this? Not a thing. It is you who must pay—not the world. Ah! boys, he was a foolish creature ■ who first said: “The world owes me a living.” He told a very silly fable. The world owes no man a living until he has done some worthy deed, some good work to make the world better and a fairer place to live in. Those old fellows who dug canals and laid out towns, who built cities and invented all these splendid things—these telegraphs, these ships, these magnificent engines—had the right idea. They worked manfully, and the world at last Uld owe ilxvru living, ana paid it many times over. If you mean to get out of the gieat debt you owe the world do something, go to work and show you | are a man. Then, when you have shown the world you can work it will gladly pay you a living, and the finer and more noble your work the greater will be your reward. Never let the words be used again , by any boy in our city, but let the he- 1 roic motto be adopted by all who are now ripening into manhood, ‘ I will make the world henor and respect me by my good works,”
A Woman’s Experience. Mothers and daughters should feel alarmed when weariness constantly oppresses them. “If lam fretful from exhaustion of vital powers and the col- | or is fading from my face. Parker's j Ginger Tonic gives quick relief. It builds me up and drives away pain with wonderful certainty.”—Buffalo ady. TO NON-RESIDENTS. The Slate of Indiana, Alams county, ss.
