THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT nr a. j. hili.. Fbidav, August 24, ISB3. Texas is a democratic state with $3,000,000 in her treasury. .«•>. Painful scandals seem to be very current among our exchanges. Senator McDonald has a strong backing for the presidential race in 'B4. The 7th Indiana Cavalry hold a reunion at Portland, October 4th and sth. Extensive preparations are being made and a good timsMß expected by the veteran troopers. We would say to the Michigan Democrat that Polk, the defaulting treasurer of Tennessee, was elected by the re-adjusters. He is a kind of Tennessee Mahone and not a democrat. Spain has a mild attempt at revolution on hand. The cry the revolutionists raise is ‘'The Republic." It is being mildly but effectually squelched, except the ever smouldering remains. Republican papers are giving Com Hanna the meanest kind of thrusts of late, in disrespectfully speaking of the disgraceful scenes in the last hour of the last legislature," referring to Tom's “pigeon holeing the appropriation bill.' Dorsey is considered a great catch for an interview. What he does not know about the campaign of 1860 need not be told, and what he is telling is as prolific of cramps to the average republican editor as green apples are to belly aches in the average small boy. Arthur, Grant and Whitelaw Reid said Dorsey was the hero of the vic" tory, with his little soap, at the Delraonico dinner. But they are denying it now, just as straight as they are denying that Hayes and Sherman did not kick Arthur out of the custom house. Every few days the Fort Wayne Gazette publishes a group of paragraphs credited to the Gazette, Canton (O.) Repository and this paper about "red stockings, etc. No such paragraph as is credited to the Democrat ever appeared in this paper. If the subject matter is either amusing or instructive to the readers of the Gt- i and it is to be supposed it is either one or the other, we suggest that it be left standing. And if the truly pious editor of the Gazette can think of anything else that ! would add to the amusing or instructive features of the matter in question, it is to be hoped his imagination will be invoked and that it will be inspired with all the religious zeal at his command. Put it by the side of the other, then, as before, credit it to the Democrat.
Our neighbor over the way has been slopping over with base ball advice for a couple of weeks, and now gives promise of being a fair crank in that direction. Some people imagine that the Journal bit more off in the Teeple matter than they can chew, and finding it harrassing and embarrassing in more ways than one, are now trying to drop the matter byway of base ball routeTheir rMe as hero and martyr doesnot | pan out just as they expected, and manufactured endorsements are not a success. The Democrat has a halfbushel of another sort of endorsement that the Journal can have if they will publish them. Had we given them a a place in our columns they would claim sympathy, and hunt endorsers of their course in vain. We will drop the subject, however, to return to the the first proposition. They are laboring under the idea that a 'new idea” has been born to them in urging the introduction of base ball iuto the public schools. That belongs to Col. Spen eer of the school board, who has been ; urging it to uo purpose, because Ctawford is an old fogy and favors “seven out, while Peterson is holding some scheme of his own in the back ground. No, there wili never a ■ new idea be born to the Journal until they soak their brains in a new stimulant, PLEAMAST ITEM*. BY NORRIS HOMO. Sweet refreshing showers of late.
