THE DECATUR DEM9CRAI BY A. L HILL. Friday, July 27, ’BB3. American race horses in England ere not distinguishing themselves this year on account of speed. A few days ago a man in New Yorl was aned |SOU for giving a giraffe « shew of tobacco. We can only imagine how much the fine would havt been augmented had it included a dram of whiskey. Then again had it been a human giraffe, what then? 11. B. Sheridan has invented an elec trical apparatus, which he terms *'an improved device for executing criminals condemned to death,” with which he proposes to paralyse them with electricity, instaneously depriving them wf life without pain. Tax American rifle team that went to England to show John Bull how tc ahoot were beaten by a score of 1,906 io 1,951. They shot at the distance of 200 yards. 500, 800, 900 and 1,006 yards. The Americans were ahead on the short ranges but were beaten on the long distances. When they shol at the long ranges the weather wae rainy and windy, unfavorable to a high acorn, which may have caused the defeat of the home team. Ever sime the republicans stole the presidency of these United States, Mr Tilden has been their awful Nemesis. They are forever threatening him. Not lest than three hundred and sixty-fin times a year he is represented by their party press as aged and decrepit, with one foot In the grave. He is the awful ghost that is forever haunting the par ty. Whether he lives or dies matters not, for nothing will ever wipe out the great and collossal fraud that made the defeated candidate, Hayes, the president in 1876. The alarming frequency of cyclones resulting in an appalling distruction of life and property throughout an exten give range of territory in the United States seem to be a marked feature of the season. The feature distinguish ing them from ordinary storms is the funnel-shaped clouds, with the point extending downward toward the earth, accompanied with a grinding, crackling and roaring sound. Wherever the point of this tunnel touches the earth it distroys everything movable, sometimes rising and passing over a considerable distance without harm, again descending only to destroy everything in its path until its fury is spent. These storms can easily be distinguished, and when they eome there is nothing to do but take refuge in th* cellar. In the absence of such refuge take the short ♦st course to get off the line of their • enurse. Dorsey, in the New York Sun, gives th* principal points by which tne republicans won the political battle of 1880. The same moral turpitude charged upon Garfield by AssistantSecretary of War Dana, in connection with his position of chief of staff of Rosenerans, is made by Dorsey in corrupt bargain and sale of offices in consideration of money subscribed, furnished and site-wards corruptly used in carrying doubtful states, notably In diana. It is as easy for republicans to deny the truth of these things as it was to deny Garfield’s Credit Mobellier business during the campaign, but their denial does not tuake the statement less truthful and convincing. There were thousands of men who voted the ticket, believing it true, who during the campaign before democrats protested it untrue. The quarrel between Conkling and the president and the thousand and one circumstances in connection with the campaign and that grew out of that quarrel is cumulative evidence of the truth of Dorsey’s statements, to the unprejudiced mind of average intelligence. It shows a party stripped of honor and integrity and so debauched and rotten that no honest upright man ean do it reverence. In the midit of this deceit, treachery and dishonor, whatever we may think of the sneering Mephistophles of the party, Conkling, he stands out in marked contrast with the rest of the gang as loyal to the st’lwarts and with a personal integrity nearer stainless than any of his political associates. In vitw of these outcropping facts and circumstances that have drifted to the surface, illustrating republican methods in the campaign of 1880, and party management afterwards, we are not astonished that Conkling has nothing left but contempt for the half-breed republicans.

Yes, gossip; of all things most adomiuable in the sight of God and man we think it is a tattling, lying tongue, and if we judge correctly our little village is infected with some of the most rediculous tongues ever enclosed with teeth. We hav* longues in onr village that will tattle, tongues that will enlarge a story and tongues that will lie. On divers occasion* that we remember trouble has originated here from tattling and lying, one case ending iu a fight and another in a lawsuit, and various others causing a regular family row all on the strength of tattling, lying and enlarging reports. On several occasions and one in particular, innocent parties have received a blessing from the hands and mouths of those addicted to listening to everything they hear and paying particular attention to every tale that floats through the gossiping community. Tales that have been started for spite, and nothing but a tongue lashing would suffice for they would be offended party. We say would be because said party listens to the tattling tongues of others and does not take the opportunity of finding out th* truth of the matter. We say giv* the devil his just dues, but l«t innocent ones alone and say what you have to say to the parties interested. Once before did we allude to tattling and we thought it would suffice, but not so; it subsided for a while, but of late it has broke out anew in such thundertones that we could not forbear in giving a short article on the subject again. But if we are called upou to give it another writing up we will giv* it in meh away that each and every one will know to just whom we allude our remark*. We hope that a word to the wise is sufficient. MONMOUTH ITK.MIL BY X. L. O. B. All the wheat that eould be found has been cut; such that could not be found, detectives are on its track. The passengers on the Rome City excursion last week were startled by a loud report which some thought sounded like the booming of artillery.
