hE DECATUR DEMOCRAT ■VJI . - ' “ TV ' TJfcgZ BY A. J. HILL. Friday. July 6, 1883. I‘hc City Council. tie l Uy Council met Monday evening and awarded the contract for grading, curbing and McAdamizing Second Mid Winchester streets, to William R. Dor* in & Co., of this place. The broken stone is to be of Decatur grey limestone, and will cost per lineal foot, 12.99. Curbing: Laurel or Berea stand stone, of the dimensions not less than four inches thick, eighteen inches wide and three inches in length, per lineal foot, 47 cents. Grading twenty-five cents per cubicyard. The work is to be completed within four months, and will cost something like SB,OOO. Pending the letting of the contract for grading, curbing and McAdamizing Second and Winchester streets, the question of the quality of the stone the different bidders proposed to fur nish was discussed. Two samples were submitted to the engineer. One the engineer, Breckenridge, of Fort Wayne, said was stratified limestone, full of fine seams invisible to the eye, but which water and frost would develop and result in cleavage. The stone would then be quickly ground to powder under the wear as wheels and be washed away by rains. The other stone was harder and without seams, much superior for curbing or McAdamizing purposes. The best sample spoken of was taken out of the river at this place, and the former was from the Bluffton quarries. PLKIMAXT MiI.LN ITP.MU. BY NOBBIS HOMO. Weather extremely warm, insuring practice for our our physicians. Boxing with the gloves and pitching horse shoes are the principal amusement. Cherries are ripening and will be about a half crop compared to last year. Our doctors are looked upon as being science in the art of pitching horse shoes. Mrs. William Armstrong is still in a lingering condition yet slowly convalescing. Farmers are busily engaged in mowing, plowing corn and preparing to gather in the golden sheaves of harvest. Another sawmill will soon be running on the farm of John P. Blaney, west of town under the management of the Ohio Wheel Company. The prospect for ccrn in this section is improving. Mrs. Sarah Archer was visiting with friends in thia vicinity over Sabbath. Ponies pass through our city daily. Mrs. Jane Hughes was interred in the cemetery here on last Monday. She was a resident of Mouroe, Ind : her ailment was that dreaded disease, consumption. Rev. Slusher discoursed at the U. B. church on last Sunday evening from -James, 2 chapter and 21 verse. J. W. Fredline, our miller, says he has another partner and can now please the public in good flour, etc.; he further states it is a boy and weighs l welre pounds. H. A. Fristoe and lady took in the doings at Geneva the Fourth. A law suit, we understand, is brewing in our community simply for a little back dues. Some of our townsmen took in the camp meeting at Decatur on last Sabbath. They were not at all pleased. Organs are becoming plenty. You ean hear their gentle ’ones at any and all hours. Our citizens are so greatly elated over the success of The Democrat that when the delivery of The Demockat arrives our post office is filled, all eager to learn the news. MONMOUTH ITU Hl. BT X. L. C. It. The mowers are rattling. Frank Lord made the first hay of the season last week, getting it cured and hauled in without ram, rather contrary to his expectation. People were surprised last Sabbath because it dids t rain, and disputea arose whether it was Sunday or not. Miss Lou. Yocum, accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Hannah Hart, left for CheniDusco, last Tuesday. Mies Anna C. Christen and Miss Katie Christen left for Dayton, Ohio, Monday. Mr. Walter Bell, of Ontario, Canada, returned to his home last week, taking with him part of the Monmouth menagerie—two pet aquirrels. Mr. P. W. Smith is building a new house at Williams. A stray bullet fired by some nimrods and perhaps glancing, accidentally found its way through the window of Mr. Al. Elzay's house, lolging in the sewing machine. Cherries and small fruit generally, arc a failure m this neighborhood this season. Two young gentlemen from Ohio have been canvassing the town selling and taking orders for enlarged pictures this week. Monmouth will nut celebrate, some are going to Rome City, some to Fort Wayne, others to Richmond, and not leaving enough at home fora corporal s guard. Reuben Chenoweth is painting the Lutheran parsonage, which it has been standing in need of ever since it was built. — Atwaia SWrMktar A delicious odor is iusparUd by Flotation Cologne, which ia always reaehmg •• Matter hew freely weed.
