THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT ■■■l .. 11 . 1 — < BY A. J. KILL. 1 1 Friday, March 4, 1883. 1 -- . .— l The new liquor law of Ohio is exor* ' cising spirits in away and manner not to the liking of the bibulously inclined. COUNTY NEWS. UEXEVA ITEMS. I Our election will be held on the first Monday in May tc fill the various town offices. Candidates appear to be scarce but think the present incumbents would be willing to sacrifice themselves another year for their country. Ira Lehmer and family are visiting here. He is offered and will likely accept a position on the C. & A. Crist Hearlin, of Briant, has purchased the building on L>ne street, formerly occupied by Wm. Reed as a residence and is remodeling it for busi ness. The C. & A. has bought Fred Main’s farm of 38 acres, for 12,500, and are opening a new gravel pit. We are informed that the G. R. & I. is also looking for gravel in this locality. It looks now as if the railroad company would monopolize the gravel here to such an extent that it will be impossible to get material to gravel our county roads. We object! The participants in the recent pugilistic encounters are convalescing lyThe viewers are assessing damages and benefits on the proposed pike leading west from town. The contract for construction will be let during the summer. The continued wet weather has delayed plowing until it is too late to sow oats. These items should have appeared last week.—Ed. PLEAHANT MILI.M ITEMS. BY “NORRIS nOMO.” In the elms a noisy crowd, —all the birds are singing loud. The young of our village of both sexes are all in ecstacy with fishing. It is fun to see Rev. D. B. Reckard bait his hook with his left hand. Mr. Alvy Comer received quite an injury to his shoulder last Friday.at Hammell's mill yard, caused by a log rolling against him. Mr. Benton Stetler, of Delphos, Ohio, was visiting with friends in the village on Thursday of last week. A number of gypsies camped on the bank of the St. Mary's opposite our place over Sunday. Rev. B. Reckard attended to the ordinance of baptism here on last Sabbath. Mrs. William Armstrong is slowly recovering. Hopes for her recovery are now brightening. Mrs. Rosaj Merriss, of whom we wiAxiviUU 3UU UU M>ss Della Fristoe has had a lingering illness for some weeks and at this writing is quite sick. Dr. Lipse occupies his new home this week. Success, doctor. A man in professional business should learn to bridle his tongue and not be free to express his opinion concerning his fellow men, and by so do ing success will be his reward, awarded by his friends and associates. Mr. R. C. Baxter, of DeKalb county, is at present calling on his many friends in this locality. We hinted in an article not long since concerning gossip, and yet it seems there are a few in this locality that think it means some one else; but, “gossiper" friend, it means you, and if you not refrain from your gossiping and lying, we will be compelled to put your name in print in such a way that you will know that it is you that we have reference to. Now, if you would attend to your own business you would find it would occupy the most of your time and people would think more of you. Take our advice and if you must talk, speak the truth and shame the devil. Farmers are now very diligent in the work of preparing and sowing their spring crops. The funeral services of John and Maggie Hutchinson, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hutchinson, were attended at this place last Sabbath, conducted by the Rev Coats. MONMOUTH ITEMS.
BY X. L. C. B. Swinging on front gates is in order. The equator is either very slow in coming or has rushed clear past us. White washers, paper hangers and carpet dusters are in demand now. Smith has purchased the Phillip Houck property in Williams, formerlyoccupied by Fred Hocne. but now ta- ■ ken possession of by Henry Gaylord, • of Arcola, who will board the mill hands there. Jim Watts has moved into his new 1 quarters and is now comfortably located in the central part of our flourishing metropolis. Jim has reformed, not only by getting married, but leaving off bad habits, (not intending to intimate that he ever had any), but, — well, we extend our hearty congratulations. Dr Shepherd and the boss tailor of Portland were here last week taking orders for suits. The boys say perhaps they are wedding suits and perhaps not. Married, by Rev. Hinshaw, of this place, Ben. Baxter to Miss Mollie Tucker, of Williams. No cards. Fish bit uncommonly well last week, so well that they were caught with their heads bit clean off, cleaned and roasted, which reminded us of the land where roasted pigeons fly into one's mouth. For further information information inquire at the mill. The Shakspeare club meets cvery Friday evening. We would just inform you, Mr. Editor, and every body else, that the Monmouth team is organized,. armed and well prepared. Gird on your armors, Decaturs, for a close rub this summer. Cal. Kunkle had a runaway Monday. No damage and nobody hurt. Walters weers the belt.
Capt. Hctiler and Mr. Cusnave master of motive power of the Pittsburg company, were here on business last week. There is a fellow in Williams who has the nerve of a royal Bengal tiger, by coming here and loafing about all day and “boning” every one towards evening for a half dollar to go home on. Mr. P. W. Smith started cn his southern trip Monday, going to Cincinnati thence to Chatanooga, his destination being Willmington, North Carolina. On Lis return trip he will come byway of Washing on, Baltimore, Boston and Philadelphia, intending to | stop a short time at those cities. He will be gone three or four weeks. Mr. Henry Tenyek, log cutter for Mr. Smith, and who boards with John Woodford, l ad bis best suit of clothes stolen last Saturday by some tramps, it is supposed. The family were awayfishing, leaving supper on the table. When they came back supper was gone* and with it Henry’s best suit. A WORD TO MOTHER*. Mothers should remember it is a most important duty at this season to look after the health of their families and cleanse the malaria and impurities from their systems, and that nothing will tone up the stomach and liver, regulate the bowels ard purify the blood so perfectly as Parker's Ginger Tonic, advertised in our columns. — Post.
