■ THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT K BY A. J. BILL. ■ Friday, April, 13, 1883. H After many ups and downs, Dr. Bl Hawn has taken his position as Sec- ■ tetary of the State Board of Health ■ Dorsey and Brady were the only ■ ones who have testified to the truth in ■ the Star Route trials, according to the ■ defence. The jury may think differB ently. ■ ‘-Go to hades” is emphatic enough to look well in type, but it is a noticeable fact that it is of no practical value to some people to give force to their emphasis. Republican papers are very much exercised as to who will be the Speaker of the next house. There is satisfaction in the certainty with which we predict it will not be Keifer. The spring elections arc no more favorable to the continuance of the Republican party in power than were those of last fall. It is written everywhere, step down and out! The Nihilists and Socialists across the water are making trouble. The English star their public buildings will be blown up and the Russian people fear their Czar will get sent skyward, If Airs Langtry has made a failure upon the stage she has sccred a point as a humorist . Speakingof the elopement of her sister, she said: “I am deeply sorry my own strict propriety cf action has not inspired my sister with a deeper sense of decorum.” Josh Billings, look out for your laurels! There is a cheap vein of Puritanism cropping out of the almshouse investigation organized by Gov. Butler in Massachusetts, not complimentary to that type of the article it was our wont to revere. It has deteriorated by having been diluted with Republicanism, which of late means anything and everything not good. Attorney-General Gebsham is the coming man, if the political glasses reflect coming events aright The position of Attorney-General will make Judge Gersham an available candidate wherever he will do Republicans most good, even though it be Governor or President, among sanguine politicians. But what will John C. New say? The Indianapolis Saturday Uerald says of the convention of Republican editors that met there last week: “A number of the politicians of the State were present on invitation.” Now it is claimed that the politicians got the floor and kept it until near midnight, monopolizing the occasion so that the politicians used up the time on purpose so as to prevent the editors from “foreshadowing” any political policy. It was certainly too bad to tie the hands of the poor fellows so they could do nothing. Last fall temperance people were dencuncing all temperance legislation as a “league with death and a covenant with hell,” save prohibition. As the spring elections come and go, they denounce those against them as being carried by the “bummer” element, but do not lift their hand to “stay the tide,’"' They are crazy upon the one subject of prohibition, and have let go of all practical methods to modify existing wrongs for this one, which has no existence except in imagination and inside the walls of penitentiaries. All they have have to do now is to enter their protest and sit down to await results. The English government does not take kindly to the fact that the sinews of war controlled by the dynamite Irish party are collected in this country, and have, it is understood, entered their protest in the Department of State, in the most emphatic manner. England has not forgotten the time when she turned Clyde-built cruisers, equipped by British gold and manned by British sailors, loose, to prey upon our commerce; when she furnished blockade runners with cargoes of contraband of war, without which the Confederacy could not have been kept running a single month. There is a moral, a right and a wrong cognizant in these questions, unnecessary to discuss in a reminder of British wrongs, committed and permitted by reason of British greed. Now that these things come home, it is well she be reminded of the motes in her eye that prevented her from being just, when the dissolution of the Union was imperilled by her help. Concil Proceedings. The regular monthly meeting of the City Council took place Tuesday evening. The Marshal reported that the sewer in the alley between Front and Second streets and extending from Monroe to Madison was completed according to contract, which was concurred in. The City Engineer was ordered to survey, level and fix the grade of Second street from the Court House to its intersection with Winchester street, thence to the Narrow Gauge depot, preparatory to gravelling the aaiue.
New England Divorces. Scarcely a decade in the past, New England was reading Indiana moral lessons from the text, “Indiana Divorces.” The divorce laws ot Indiana were a rank offence against Puritian morals, and we humbly bowed our | heads, acknowleßging our faults, and : in the regular course of events, modi- ■ fled our divorce laws. How much New England contributed to our disgrace we do not care to inquire. But times have changed since then. The Rev. S. R. Dike, Secretary of the New England Divorce Reform League, in a recent address on the subject of divorce statistics, made some startling statements in regard to the alarming increase of divorces in the New England States. In 1849, the whole number of divorces in Connecticut was ninety-one, and at present the average is four hundred and forty each year, an increase of seventy percent in thirty years, taking the increase of population into the account. The ratio of divorces to marriages is one to ten, and the same ratio exists in Rhode Island. In New Hampshire it is one divorce for every nine marriages, and in Maine nearly the same proportion exists. Vermont gives us better figures, the ratio being one to thirteen, and Massachusetts still better, one divorce to every twenty one marriages. Perhaps it would be well for Indiana editors to load their columns with the argument that New England journals once read to us Hoosiers, and return them with our compliments. burglarized. Loss Estimated al SW.BOO—Uluaa, Elzey dt Co., Jeweler®, the Victim®. Wednesday night the jewelry store of Closs, Elzey & Co. was entered byprying open the door of the back shed and cutting out a panel of the back door of the business room proper. The jewelry was packed into one of Hall s fire-proof safes, which was entered by knocking off the combination and throwing the bolts of the safe, and their prize was before them. The principal articles taken were twenty gold watches, forty silver watches, ladies and gents' chains, ladies sets, i veil pins, bracelets, some 1700 worth ! of plain and fancy set rings, and about ' iIOO in cash. In fact the establishI ment was completely gutted of its en- ' tire contents of jewelry of any value. The city is filled with rumors and pointers, as to who the burglars are, but, summed up, it shows nothing definite. Mr. Elzey has noticed several parties within two weeks who aroused his suspicion by their close inspection of the building and contents. The tools used were taken from Rhodes & Cos.’ and Bushnell & Schlegels blacksmith shops. In the light of Wednesday night's events, sus- ' picious parties were at both shops. One, at least, of the parties would be recognized from the description given by Rhodes and fiushnell as the same. A general consultation has been had among officers, the telegraphed invoked, and the result will be the outlying country will be rigidly inspected in the search for the thieves. It is to be hoped the search will not be in vain, that they will be captured and the goods restored to the proper owners. A WORDTO MOTHER* Mothers should remember it is a most important duty at this season to look after the health of their families and cleanse the malaria and impurities from their systems, and that nothing will tone up the stomach and liver, regulate the bowels and purify the blood so perfectly as Parker's Ginger Tonic, advertised in our columns. — > Putt.
