THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT BY A. J. HILL. Friday, March, 30, 1883, An attempt is being made to get a new indictment against Brady, which means a six month’s extension of the Star Route trials, if successful. Gen. Grant will soon be the worst “licked'' man in the world. His vignette will adorn the new two cent postage stamp. The proposed Bluffton and Union railroad is about as prolific a source for a paragraph for the local papers altrg the line as the Star Route trials aic for the press generally. Since the adjournment of Congress nothing more is heard of the shutting down of rolling mills and their running at loss to the owners. It was a special plea for a high protective tariff that would enable the mills to rob those compelled to use their product. It is a felony for a member of the Michigan legislature to accept a pass from a railroad company. There is nothing to prevent the railroad company from refusing the money the aforesaid had to pay for his ticket, however. Thebe is no such thing as Star Route thieves, or bribery and corruption, in connection with the republican party—so Republicans say. But singular to relate, about the first greeting among Republican members of Congress is, how much money did it take to overcome the natural majority against you? If the replies of these gentlemen could be heard, it would surprise some of our pious Republican friends, whose faith is, if anything, stronger in their party than in their God. Republican papers are doing business upon a very small capital, in protesting and growling at the action of the recently adjourned Legislature, which simply wiped out some of the extravagant and unnecessary acts of the Republican Legislature which preceded it, all that was necessary to do, and for which they deserve commendation. The growl of our Republican friends, is an attempt to manufacture cheap political capital. \\ hen they point out a single thing that was done that ought to have been left undone, then it will be time for more specific pleading. PLEASANT MILLS ITEMS. BY “NORRIS HOMO.” Roads in this locality are excellent for this season of the year. J. C. Hill is again permitted to walk our streets, after an illness of four weeks. Farmers report wheat looking rather poor in comparison with other years. Ocr hotel at this place is under the supervision of Acker & Son and is nearly completed. H. A. Worden takes charge of the grist mill at this place the 28 inst. Supt. France and wife were present at church on last Sabbath morning. Mrs. Acker, of Decatur, was visiting with friends in this community -on last Sabbath. J. T. Armstrong and wife and Ezra Mcßarnes and wife, of Berne, Ind., were visiting with friends in our place a few days this week. Our harp players of this place are becoming numerous. “Occasional" says he still holds the fort. We wonder if he does ? A certain young married man of this place went to Willshire, a few evenings since, and procured for his better half a new pair of shoes, after which he imbibed a little too freely and ob hisreturn home and lost one of the shoes. Any one finding said shoe can find the mate to it by coming to Pleasant Mills. Dr. Lipse has purchased the house and lot formerly owned by Rev. D. B. Reckard, and he intends to make P. M. his future home. Pleasant Mills has three professional barbers, or at least that is what they say. “Our Jack ’ and the Decatur constable failed to make the arrest. For full particulars enquire of .Seymour Worden. Mr. E. D. Stetler, who for the past year has been traveling in the west for his health, made his appearance at this place on last Saturday evening, looking very much recruited. Madam Rumor is doing her work grandly, in this section of the country. Rev. Reckard discoursed at the Baptist church on Sabbath morning; the text may be found by referring to Proverbs, 4th chapter, 23rd verse. Sabbath school was reorganized at this place on last Sabbath which resulted in the election of the following named officers : Superintendent, Mrs Mollie Eichar; Assistant, Mrs. Jacob Yager; Secretary, Mrs. Ed. France; Treasurer, Mr. Otis Archer. Teach ers, D. B. Reckard, H. A. Fristoe, Ida Rouland, Belle Merries and Mrs. Counterman. G. A. R. Meeting. School No. 6, or the Williams school closed last Friday. Monmouth has o> ganized a Sbakespcrian reading club, which meets every Tuesday night. Ho! ho! I .Mr. Walters, we think you are coming out just a little too prematurely in annonneing yourself as the champi on chess player, as that has not been decided yet and there are two others who will dispute that honor with you, with one or two not yet heard from. A WOK OTO MOTHERS. Mothers should remember it is a most important duty at this season to look after the health of their families and cleanse the malaria and impurities from their systems, and that nothing ■ will tone up the stomach and liver, regulate the bowels ard purify the blood so perfectly as Parker's Ginger Tonic, advert sed in our columns. — Pott.
