THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT P ' BY A. J. HILL. Friday, February, 9, 1883. The women claim that president Arthur is a gentleman, if he is not a teetotaler. Indiana takes high rank as a coal producing state. The out put last year was 1,771,536 tons. The jxice de resistance in the Ohio Legislature is the temperance question. It is quite as troublesome as the same question in Indiana. The Indianapolis Saturday Herald says : There is an increase of temperance sentiment in the State, but a decline of the idea of prohibition. The Prussian goverments wish their people to pay about five cents per pound more for home raised poric tnan they can buy American meat sot This is one of the beauties of protection that enables the few to put money into their pocket at the expense of the many. Our tariff list contains many similar illustrations. There is a large amount of red tape in connection with the State Board of Health, but with the all its defects, it is to be hoped the Legislature will not wipe it out. The record of births and deaths.vital statistics generally, and the control it gives of contagious diseases arevaluable features, recommended by the most eminent medical authorities of the world. It may cost something, but it is money judiciously expended. During the year, 1,200 dogs Lave been officially slaughtered under the dog law of this state. After ail, the dog law may be considered a good measure. The destruction of sheep in the state by dogs is no inconsiderable item, and anything that will reduce the number of dogs, in that pro portion is beneficial to sheep raising. Besides all curs are worthless, except for sausage. If any considerable number, as is currently reported, are worked up in this way there is a compensation in their death greater than may have been dreamed of. Bremerkamp-Eiting W edding. Un Thursday last the marriage of John H. Bremerkamp of this place to Josephine Biting, of Minster, Ohio, took place at the Catholic Church. Bev. Theo. H. Wilkins tied the knot. In the evening the wedding party and invited guests, occupied the second story of the Shafer Bros, new building, and whirled in the giddy mares of the dance to music furnished by Seibold’s Orchestra, Fort Wayne. At eleven o'clock the banquet was served at the Miesse House. An elaborate bill of fare had been prepared by the host for the occasion, which was served up in excellent style, and all went merry as a marriage bell. About one hundred gathered around the board upon the occasion. After supper exercises were renewed at the hall and kept up until a late hour. The next day the young couple left for Minster, Ohio, the home of the bride. They will make Decatur their future home. Following is a list of presents: Bed room set, D. FLIAEAXT MILLS ITEMS OCCASIONAL. The roads are in a perfect glare of ice at this writing and the rain coming down in torrents. We are glad to note that W. H. H. France is better. The protracted meeting held in this village by Rev. D. B. Reckard is still in progress, and several accessions to the the church. Al. Fristoe is the champion bean counter of this place. N. Acker & Son are securing goods daily. KIKKLAAD TOWNSHIP ITEMS. BY “BUB.” Mrs. Robert Niblick is visiting friends in Allen county. The Schurger Creek was higher last Monday than for sixteen years. It flooded the bottoms and washed a large amount of fencing away. Joe Stoneburner's attraction in Howard county, is a Miss Loup. Be careful Joe, Loups are dangerous, of which Guilean's case is an illustration. Susan Zimmerman is preparing to build a fine large commodious barn the coming spring. Rovenault has the contract. Birthday Surprise. February Ist. was the fifty-seven th anniversary of the birth of Israel Stoneburner, a matter which he had fo.gotten. His friends and neighbors had not. They gathered into the num ber of one hundred and twenty-five, with an organized commissary, that would have done credit at a wedding banquet. They left quite a number of presents and souvenirs of the occasion. The reunion was a pleasant and enjoy--1 able occasion, for all who were fortune e enough to be present. Wishing him many returns they dispersed to their several homes. Marriage Licenses. The following is a list of those who have received marriage licenses since our last report; Frederick M.
