————■■mi ■— - I HE DECATUR DEMOCRAT BY A. J. HILL. Friday, January, 12, 1883. Kentucky seems to be striking hard for the next Speakership of the House. Mr. Blackburn and Carlisle are the candidates. Dr. Gerbish is at Indianapolis looking after the prohibitory amendment. If the temperance people expect to do anything with the present legislature they had better drop their special election foolishness. Gen. Beauregard has written a history of the late civil war, which is now in press. He goes for Jeff Davis in a political, civil and military sense that will not be very soothing to the egotism of the as oresaid. Ben Butler, was inaugrated governor of Massachusetts last week. In his inaugural address he suggested to the legislature a plan to enfranchise 160,000 white men, of Massachusetts, now disfranchised. If they were negroes puritanism would have a ballot in their hands within a week, but being “white trash,” Ben’s suggestion will be given the cold shoulder. The State Treasurer of Tennessee — a Democrat remember —is charged with stealing an amount exceeding 1400,000. The matter will be investigated, and if true, it is to be hoped he will be put where such things are not possible. Meanwhile this will furnish the Republican journals of the country with a “pointer” illustration of Democratic stealing, that will last for the next four years. It will furnish capital to cover up all the political stealing of the party. It will be a whole loaf of comfort to them. There will be no end to their whining and crying over, the dishonesty of X emocratic officials, and the never-before-heard-of stealing that a Democrat has been guilty of. Pitch in gentlemen, and make the most of it. Obituary. Armstrong McCann was born in Meigs county, Ohio, in 1840. He passed his boyhood in Meigs and 4 inton counties. In March, 1861, was united in marriage to Miss Lydia A. Wells, of Vinton county, Ohio. And in 1865 moved to Richland county, Wisconsin, and in March, 1872, moved to Decatur, where he continued to reside until death. He had been in poor health for a considerable time, his business, stockbuyer, requiring hardship, and exposure. A few weeks since was afflicted with a carbuncle, which in consequence of his physical condition and exposure finally ended his life by the absorption of poisonous matter from the ulcer which resulted in his death Mr. McCann was upright and conciencious in all his dealings. He was widely known in this county, aud his loss will be deeply deplored. His funeral was held at the Court House, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dustman of the Evangelical ehurch. Literary. Wayne, author of some of the most popular music books of the day and Principal of the Northern Indiana Normal Music School, will open a Musical Institute in the M. E. church, of this place, Monday evening, January 22nd, to continue two weeks, with afternoon and evening sessions. This will be the finest opportunity ever afforded to the people of Decatur and vicinity to get a thorough drill in music. Miss Princess L. Clark, the distinguished soprano soloist and music teacher, will assist in the Institute and give private vocal lessons to all those desiring her services. Particulars concerning the Institute can be obtained .by conferring with County Sup’t Luckey, Rev. Teague and J. C. Dorwin. A New Business. Messrs Dorwin A Holthouse have purchased of the proprietor, the Dr. Marshall proprietary medicines, consisting of Marshall's Lung Syrup; Marshall's Bromaline; Marshall's Arabian Oil and Marshall's Pills. They will hereafter be manufactured at Decatur, by the Dr. Marshall Medicine Company. This medicine already has an extensive sale, end with the financial and executive ability that the new firm will be able to cammand, we predict a successful future to the new proprietors. A San Francisco doctor has restored a lady to health by removing one of her kidneys. There are only seventythree cases on record. We are acquainted with a case where the removal of a lady's tongue would relieve an entire community, and there is not a single case on record of it ever having bees eneeeMfully accomplished.
