THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT BY A. J. HILL. Friday, December 22 1882. It is quite probable that Congress will pass a new bankrupt bill before the close of the session. The president recommends a reduction upon letter postage. If he had asked that newspapers with a circulation not exceeding 3,000 be placed upon the free list it would have been much better. A new act has been introduced in Congress to prevent political assessments. Why not enforce the present law and fine and imprison offenders, as now provided by law. One law enforced is worth a dozen that remain a dead letter upon the statute books of the nation. Some Republican papers wish to have Hubbell and his assessments investigated. As if his ways were not past finding out.' As if the Republican party were going to give up their secrets. You cannot whitewash Hubbell or the party by any such proceeding. Besides the people reported on that question last fall. Wise polititicians should require nothing more. Hubbell's ways stinketh. Henry Ward Beecher was summoned before the Senate committee on grain corners, and gave them his views on grain gambling. He said it was a part of his profession to deal in futures. There were two ways of dealing in futures; in the realities and in risks and chances. Money making in Wall street was an illusion. A public assembly can do very little good ,in this direction, as there is no law that can make morality. This is a wonderful country. And the reasons for the reverses of the Republican party are as wonderful as the country. The temperance question seems to be the favorite cause to blame, judging by the lament in the Republican papers. But way down from the land of clams and codfish and puritans, they claim Butler was elected because of his affilliation with the whiskey interest, while the returns of the election show that the local option prohibition sentiment in Massachusetts is gaining ground. Can both statements be true ? It hardly seems possible or probable. Yet if Republican paper? can obtain any comfort by taking this position they are entitled to all they can squeeze out of it. Circuit Court Items. The Grand Jury did not get down to business until Wednesday afternoon. They will interview a large number of witnesses inregard to matters andthings concerning the peace and dignity of the State of Indiana before they adjourn. There are quite a number of our people anxiously awaiting the result of their inquiries. Samuel Bench, Judge of the Criminal Court of Allen county, was in this place, Tuesday, on legal business. Robert Lowry, M. C. elect of the twelfth district, was in Decatur, Saturday. He has been engaged upon the part of the prosecution in the case of the State of Indiana vs. J. J. TonnelHer et al, indicted for murder. Up to Wednesday noon, but one state case had been disposed of. The State vs J. J. Tonnellier et al, indicted for maintaining a common nuisance. A plea of guilty was entered, and the defendants fined ten dollars and costs. In consequence of the illness of Judge Bobo, but little business was transacted the first week of the term, and as a consequence the regular order of business was somewhat deranged. Monday, however, the Judge was able to take his seat, since which business has been quietly progressing. Wednesday, Kirkland and Preble townships were out in some force. They were wrestling over the Eldridge ditch, which has met with all the delays that could be applied in the Comissioners’ Court. Down and Up. This is good weather to sit down. It is no trouble to sit, but to get down at the right time and place, and do it gracefully, that s the rub. A great, many people have tried it within the last few days. In short, there seems to be a sitting epidemic. You look across the street and see some fellow spread himself out on the sidewalk. It is funny, and an uncontrollable desire to laughjseizes one. About the, time that grip fastens one, he is seized with a kind of proneness to do as the other fellow did, makes as grand a success as his predecessor, and has just as appreciative a crowd to cheer his success. It does not take much capital to go into business, and one can realize promptly. Do not take not our word for it, but try it and you will not do so again if you can help it. Married. Married.—At the residence of Isaac Sudduth,of Adams county, Ind., Dec. 14, 1882, by Rev. Hilliard Hcdson, Mr. Georoe Bkvnbtle and Miss Mary E. Sudduth. We wish the happy couple a prosperous and happy life. H. H.
