THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT BY A. J. HILL. Friday, DeceMBBI 1 1882. Republic as political doctors are prescribing democratic medicine to the dying darty. i Dobsby’s health is Wo bad to stand a trial, but it is good enough to act as Secretary of the National ReRepublican Committee. Poor Dorsey’s address to the public, purporting to to give the true inwardness of the star route business, was a poor investment for comfort, judging from what the press gang says of him. It is said a certain reward awaits every triumph over temptation. There is a strange apathy on the part of the overwhelming majority to have sai certain reward go to the other party. Thurlow Weed, by his death, revived that never answered connundrum about Morgan and the Masons. It occurred too far back, to revive the animosities of the past, or the interest that there was in the fate of- organ- . Widespread spontaneous disaffection rises from causes universally operating. And politicians who are so unwise as to be unconscious of such things operating upon the minds of men. until disasters overtake them, are incapable of prescribing a remedy. A Republican paper inquires wh ether the party is sufficiently aggressive or not. It is neither aggressive or defensive. It has been in such a position that silence was a better defense of the charges brought by the Democratic party than a denial of them. Robeson with an average of about $20,000,000 a year retired our “ av YAnd now the people have retired Robeson. Had they done this fifteen years ago, we would have had a navy that every little South American republie could not insult with impunity. The Cincinnati News, a new Democratic paper made its appearance at Cincinnati, 0., some two weeks since. We like its appearance and conduct so far very much. It is not as large as the Enquirer, but by the “boiling down ’ process manages to give a vast amount of news in a very attractive form. It is entirely devoid of the sensational, and will evidently take high rank as a reliable conservative Democratic paper.
There is a great deal of temperance chatter about these times, but the saloons more than hold them level with their attractions. They are the opposing forces in this community. The one says young man keep sober; do not spend your money foolishly. To drink it up is a bad investment. The Y. M. says yes, yes. If the average y. m. means well and truly yes, yes, he j makes a failure in many instances. His relapses are painfully frequent as is apparent to to any one who will take the trouble to investigate. It seems to be easier to do wrong without an invitatation than to do right with one. EiPVBLIOAS bosses in the south have long practiced organizing negroes by forming them into companies and marching them to the polls. The same plan works well in the large manufacturing towns of New England. This fall, according to the Indianapolis Sentinel, the Studabaker Wagon Factoiy and South Bend Chilled Plow Works, South Bend, Indiana, did the same business. Their workmen who refused to submit were given to understand that if they did not submit they could go elsewhere for work. If this is a free country, there will be a revolt from such prcceedings sooner or later. These firms may be nch, domineering, arrogant. Republicanism may be such a blessing that it needs be forced upon the people, but such acts will in due time react upon the men and parties who employ or countenance them. The people love fair play and if denied them by one party, they will go elsewhere for it, but fair play they will have, sooner or later. The Democratic party have been Crying out to the Republican party, your measures are wrongful, unjust and oppressive; your legislation has been in behalf of favored classes and against the masses. The election camo and the result shows the charges true. Republicans explain by saying, our party did not vote, if they had we should have been all right. On the heels of this, they show their insincerity by proposing some of the very reforms urged by Democrats, and the present Republican Congress is full of devices and schemes having in view a purpose to regain the ground lost, but they have forgotten the first essential, :o acknowledge their wrong, which is the first step toward forgiveness and restored confidence. Promises go for nothing, because their record for the last fifteen years is strewn with broken promises, which have increased in volume and vehemence and the more solemn the pledge, the easier it became to violate it There was only one thing to do, and that was for the people to take the government out of their hands. And they made a good beginning in that direction this fall, which will be concluded in ’B2.
