Conoress eoavcaed Moaday, Keif- i er was in his place, and will wield I bis brief authority for a short time. The President’s Message recommends sweeping reduetions in the internal revenue just what Democrats offered to; do. but Republicans rejected. Tub Star route business W a kind , of half breed-stalwart jfight which political gladiators anxious for each other’s blood are ready to do. that the ‘ other fellows may die. They will make a' lovely set of brothers when the next political fight is on, and in their death they will not be divided Thb Statements pro and con of Dorsey, MeVeah et al in regard to the star route business is only valuable in showing the art of fencing. It is not; a discussion of the case that is wanted but as honest impartial trial, and an > honest verdict, after a truthful pres-; eolation of all the facta in the case. ‘ This, however, judging by the past is impossible. Mrs. Mary E. Foster is a candidate for the position of state Librarian She is the widow of the late Senator Poster, of Fort Wayne, and since his death has conducted the daily and weekly Journal with marked ability, ‘ during the recent campaign Those who know her best, speak of her as a worthy lady, with all the literary jnal- , flea t. ions to intelligently fill the position to which she aspires. Thk Demo- ! CHAT hopes “our members will re-1 member ber when the time comes to j aet. George W. Steele's alleged majority over Joseph S. Dailey is 333—Decatar Democrat. Bro. Hill, if your vest pocket etttains an alleged majority for Joseph S Dailey, will yon please be kind enough to exhibit it for the benefit of the public.! Qmt year whining or show up— Port land Conrrnrrcdal. Ip stating a fact is whining then I we plead guilty, Bro. Marsh. Alleged majority” expresses a fact The Democrat did not say directly, or by implication, that Mr. Dailey had a majority. It might be inferred that i Steele’s majority was of the Dorsey - [ Hubble character, and if such is the case The Democrat has no desire to modify such inference. The Kokomo JHrpateh reproves the ladies of the Women’s Christian Tern- i perance I nion, for their resolution of endorsement of George W. Steele, in > fitting term and considerable length 1 The frinpatch discourses of the cbar- i aster they endorsed as follows: On the other hand, the Republican nominee. George W. Steele, was a man , who had never taken a stare! in favor of temperance or any moral reform He was an avowed anti-prohibitionist a dram-drinker, never hesitating to buy and give intoxicating ffejuors to the men, young and old, whose votes he sought and a man whose character for virtue and chastity was not a ove ; suspicion. Tho saloon vote of the district could not be brought to favor Dailey because of his known temper aneo proclivities, but rallied enrhusi astically under the banner of the immaculate Fteele. Mrs. Holloway in her address of of welcome at the W. ('. T. I' con-I ventien thought it shameful that some ! of the professed temperance people i had turned back upon their principles •s indicated by the vote a» the recent; election. Mrs. Holloway should re- j member another thing, that Democrats did not think it necessary to vote the Republican ticket in order to be con-1 Bwtcist temperance men. And rt was ‘ not wise for temperance ladies to as- i •ere that Democrats who refused, belonged to the ‘‘whiskey ring It looks to a man up a tree, so far as this county was concerned, that the ( "big four” and the rest of the temperance women, would, if only one proposition could succeed, have , preferred the success of the Repub'i<mn ticket, rather than submission, tn other words Republicanism first, temperance afterwards, if they eonld secure it. And a careful review of the aet«, speeches, and writ- ' ings o' the W. T. U. will bear us * out in the eonflwsions. Mrs. Wells in her remarks at the Presbyterian church said we were not ■ beaten in Indiana. The vote shows , it. She then went on to say that the ( Greenback and R- publican vote ad- ■ ( ded together, representer] the strength . of the prohibition sentiment in the ( •tate. That had they acted together, as they would in the future, there was j nothing to fe»r. It maybe a comfortable cone’nsion, but it is a very deceptive one. We are aeiinainted, personr I ally. with many Republicans who were very ardent submiseionists, who were and are now just as strong noqualified j •ati prohibitionists. >
