THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT. BY A. J. HILL. Fkiway, November 25,1881. This is a poor year for half breeds. Our lecture association business leems to be languishing. Our neighbor seems to enjoy putting up straw men and then knocking them down again. The Republican party having adopted the principal of repudiation in the Virginia campaign, it is fair to presume those journals that do not protest, endorse the principle, but do not have the courage to advocate it. That terrible scourge the small pox has broken out in many places, and may assume an epidemic form before spring. The only sure prevention is vaccinationThis should be attended to without delay. If the repudiation business travels much further, with the aid of northern Republicans, the southern people will probably repudiate some of the old time earpet bag swindles of long ago. If the loss could be made to fall upon proper parties, there would not be many serious objections. It seems to be the settled policy of the Republicanparty to steals rom the government all the money they want for campaign purposes. The stealing of the past administration is discovered by the one in power, who take all the glory upon themselves for bringing it to light. They formerly prosecuted the thieves, convicted a few, then pardoned them; but they do not go to that trouble now. They claim that they have a patent on the business, and it is a sure thing to keep the Republican party in power.
Those Republican journals that endorse the Marion, Mississippi, shot gun policy, by justifying the negroes because of an alleged threat made at some other time and place, only put in the murderers plea. In other words, the shot gun is a useful political factor in the hands of Republican negroes but is a great political outrage if it hould be employed by white Democrats. The . Democrat is of the opinion, that ‘•might does not make right' in either case, and would not even indirectly, chuckle over a shot gun victory of it, own party. This is left for Republican journals to indulge in. They shall have the field all to themselves. < » » — Some folks would be glad to have it understood that Indiana was carried for the Republicans at the last election on the tariff question. A Republican of this state, once a congressman, and at the last election, a member of the Republican State Central Committee, said j«st after the election. The Maine business saved us. Before Maine went wild, we could not get a cent from the National Committee. Afterwards they inquired how much money we wanted to carry Indiana. The information was furnished, and Dorsey brought the money. That s how Indiana was carried said If necessary, the name, time place and circumstances under which these declarations were made could be given. Pleasant Mill Items. BT “SCLLA.” Farmers have heeu busy gathering corn for the past week. Mr. Asa McMillen is gaming slowly in health. H. A. Fristoe was on the sick list the past week. Rev. D. B. Reckard was visiting friends in Bluffton the forepart of last week. Dr. J. L. Harper and family are occupying part of the widow Murray s house, on the corner of Main and Monstreets. Our school was organized at this
place, on last Monday, with an attendance of fifty. Mr. A. JI. Fuller and John Steele paid Fort Wayne a Hying visit on Friday of last week. Mr. Dayton Stetler has resigned his position as one of the teachers of Blue Creek township. lie contemplates buying stcck for shipment and stocking his farm. The St. Marys river has been out of banks since our recent rains doing some damage to the wheat and corn in the bottoms. A portion of the old St. Marys river bridge at this place which our citizens had bought to convert into a side walk, was swept away by the late flood Mr. Jahn T. France, of Decatur, was in our villiage the latter part of last week on business; we judge from the stir in the north end of town Mr. Lambert Patrick, formerly a resident of this place but latterly of Clay county, Arkansas, departed this life of * erysipelas and typhoid fever on the Bth of this month. A number of our young folks had a very pleasant social time at the residence of Richard Murray, one evening last week. Mr. Ed. France and lady attended the wedding of Mr. James Place, a! Decatur, last week. Mr Jesse Billman has sold his hous< and lot in this place 10 Mr Adam pie We understand his intentions an to start a saloon. May God forbid, fv we have no uced of a saloon here.
ALMOST COMPLETED. The T. D. & B. Shops Nearly Ready for Occupancy. The T. D & B shops located at the north end of town are rapidly approaching completion. The contractors, Messers. Moon & Christen, of Decatur, Ind., have put their best foot foremost in the erection of these mammoth buildings, consisting of a round house, machine shop, blacksmith shop, etc., These gentlemen have shown much more skill and exercised more care in this work than is usually bestowed upon buildings of this kind. These shops are of brick and are most substantially put together and compare , in style and magnitude with the best. ■ The Superintendent for the contractors, Mr. Robert Martin, of this , city, favorably known as an industri- , ous and skilled mechanic, looks carefully after the interests of the men employed, as well as to the complete construction of the buildings, which is sufficient guaranty that the work is being done in a masterly manner. When completed the machinery, engines and everything pertaining to the railroad shops will be removed from the old frame building south of town and put in place in their new and commodious quarters. Two hundred men will be put to work at once and the work of building cars pushed rapidly forward. Thus it will be seen that the prosperity of the road is assured, and also that the business interest of Delphos, by this arrangement will be greatly enhanced. — Delphos Herald.
Another Railroad. A meeting was held in Fort M ayne last week, which was reported in the Sentinel, in the interest of a new railroad from that place to the Hocking valley coal fields via of Springfield' The natural route of the road is through this place. If th . road is to be built, it would be a wise move upon the part of our citizens to take hold of theproject and assistall wecan. Pursuing the natural route, the road would strike this countysomewhcre in the north part of Jefferson township, then follow a straight line to Decatur, thence down the west side of the St. Marys river, through Preble township, to Fort Wayne. Undoubtedly considerable aid can be procured for the road at the proper time, and it should be given. From the tone cf the meeting at Fort Wayne, there is no doubt butthat the preliminary steps to build the road will soon be taken, and The Democrat calls attention to the fact so that the people along the line can talk the matter over and be prepared to act when the proper time time comes. Several of our citizens were present at the meeting, among them R. S. Peterson, who was right in stating our county would do her part The Small Pox. The small pox scare is not altogether a scare. Its simultaneous appearance in : many different localities, taken togeth- ■ er with quite a number of eases iu the neighboring city of Fort Wayne, would ' justify caution upon the part of our people in putting themselves in tbe way of getting in contact with it. Next, they should not neglect vaccination. This should be attended to without de. i lay. It is the only known sure preven- !
tive of the small pox. With all the care and prudence our people can employ, as a community, should it develop into an epidemic form, we will undoubtedly have more or less cases. If our people vaccinate now, there will be but little trouble; if they do not heed the warning in time the community will have to suffer the consequence. An ounce of prevention is worth a thousand pounds of cure in this case, ft Brother Editors of the Eleventh Congressional District. Gentlemen, what say you to holding an Editorial Convention for the purpose of organizing an association aud laying the foundation for a closer fellowship and the protection of our mutual interests? Such associations are being formed throughout the State, and must in time be a great benefit to publishers in the enhancement of their business interests. Let us heir from each of you with unreserved suggestions as to the proposition, and also as to your choice of time and a convenient place where we should hob! our first meeting, if at all.— Huntington Democrat. The Democrat is in favor of the suggestion and will be content with any time and place agreed upon.
Married. At the residence of Riehard Winans on the22nd of November. 1881, by Rev. D. J. Schenck, Joseph D. Winans to Miss Isabelle Archer, all of Adams county. Indiana. The above wedding was a pleasant surprise to many pre* ent, who were invited as they supposed, to a birthday supper, in honor to Mr Richard Winaas. Little dreaming that the careful and thrifty Joseph and the beautiful Isabelle were about to unite their fortunes for life. But it was even so, and they were married while several score of their young friends looked on in astonished admiration t|ay a long life of usefulness and hapbe theirs. Rkx»rtfr.
