THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT. BY A. J. HILL. Friday, November* 11,1881. Our people never forget the turkey and pumpkin pi« departmentof Thanksgiving. The President has appointed Thursday, November 2 Itji, as a day of Thanksgiving. Wheat, fruit and canned salmon are great and growing business interests on the Pacific slope. The Star Route people increased the national debt $9,000,000. At least that is the estimate of tljeir jt.ealing. Vennor s weather prediction for November is that it will enter decidedly cold and wet, but after the first week will be mitred and pleasant. The State of New York is developing an unusual number of statesmen, and a great many of them are drawing “prizes in the lottery of assassination.
There are more ways to spell Halloween than was thought possible. Last week it was mentioned by all the exchanges ? that came tojthis office, and nearly all of them spelled it lyThe Republicans favor the carving out of a new state, from a portion of Dakota, with a view of getting two more additional senators, an i thus do awa- with the politically too evenly balanced Senate. The typhoid fever seems to be pre vailing extensively in a large circuit around us. As an instance of its ravages, the Marion Democrat says, one physi .an of that place has twenty cas- < among the list of patients. Dorsey was the best man at the joli fieation dinner over the result of the ’....f .irrtsidpniielection, held last fall in the city ot New York. rosiuiMtv. General James McVeagh and others, are confident they have sufficient proof io send Dorsey to the penitentiary. But would it do to send the Secretary ■of the Republican National Committee to such a place ? A Story is told of Vanderbilt that the boys on the Pennsylvania Railroad discovered him on one of the trains. To show him what they could do they pulled open .the throttle of the engine and let her go, making three miles in two minutes and twenty-one seconds, very much to the delight of the railroad king. It is said the explanation of the demand for Confederate bonds, arises from the fact that English banks hold $17,000,000; in gold, placed there to the credit of the Confederate govern merit. That the U. S. Treasury has repeatedly failed to get this gold, the banks insisting that the title is in the holders of these bonds.
The opium trade is one of those questions that it is very bard to get iccarate information about. If reports .ire to be celled upon there are 560.000 opium-eaters in this country. This report probably falls far short of the number. There are few small towns, but what nave several habitual users of the noxious drug, but they are so reticieat and secretive about its use that the number who use it are rather under than overestimated. Its use is j slow but sure death. The iron rule of Bismark seems to be again relaxed. When lie first came into power he ruled with an imperious will. Afterwards he was compelled to ally himself with different parties to control a majority in the Reichstag But it seems that the Liberals in the last election have securred a clear majority. Personal government is not as p ipular as it was even, in Germany. The determined efforts the new administration in the way of civil service reform are beautifully illustrated in the removal of the wounded Union soldier from the position ol postmaster at Lynchburg, Va., and .putting Clifford Statham, the Mahone rebel repudistor in his place. And all this after the Senate, before its adjournment, had refused to make the change. Another “prize in the lottery of assassination.’’ Sam Winters, in the Kokomo Dispatch, announces that Miami county has two congressional aspirants, on the Democratic side of the house, John L. Farrar and John D. Cox. He says of the outlook : The Democratic party is being furnished daily with material for an aggressive campaign next year. The recent exposure of the Star mail route rascalities—which involves ex-Presi-d«nt Hayes's Administration in one of the most daring and villainous crimes ever perpetrated against the Government, made still more infamous by having been suppressed and the criminals shielded from prosecution to save the Republican party f.om defeat in . the Presidential election of last year,
notoriously confessed by James N. Tyner, charges that the frauds were know to Mr. Hayes, Postmaster-General Key. and himself as long ago as August, 1879 —command a zeal and an ability in the management of the campaign of 1882, which canuot be overestimated Able and popular men must be our jitandard-bearers; men who know how to work, when to work, and who never tire of working. Knowing John L Farrar to be a prudent and sagacious leader- a powerful and an effective
speaker, clear in statement, invincible in argument; and a favorite among tho people wherever known, it occurs to tue that with him as a candidate for Congress a Democratic success would be assured in this close district.
