For hundreds of years not a single account of a destructive hail storm has appeared in the newspapers that didn't say the “hailstones were as large as hen's eggs." Many persons had come to believe that eggs were invented for the sole purpose of comparing with the siae of hailstones. But there has been a new departure. A telegraphic account of a recent storm in the West says “the hailstones were as large as door knobs, and the author of the new comparison will doubtless receive the thanks of all newspaper readers.-AbrrAtoirn Herald. A Straight Temperance Drink. [Detroit Free Press] Among the thirsty ones yesterdayhunting up aud down Woodward avenue for something to quench thirst was a man in rusty black, who entered the drug store and scf'uy inquired: •Have you a temperance drink?’ ‘Two or three of ’em. Will you have soda water or ginger ale?' ■Well, our society does not regard • either of these as a strictly temperance drink. Both are associated with stronger liquors.' ‘How would root beer answer?’ ‘Suspicious, su-picious,' was the whispered reply. ‘Ah! I've got it now!' -Ah!’ ‘I can give you a straight temper- ! ance drink as cool as ice, but it comes high.’ ‘How much?' ‘Ten cents a glass.’ ‘Very well, said the old man, as he put down his dime. The druggist was absent only a minute and then returned and placed a glass of liquid before him. The old man drank half of it. smacked his lips and asked: ‘lsn't this water?’ Certainly; it is called water. I just drew it from the hydrant.’ The excursionist set the glass down much harder than he needed to, but- ; toned his coat., and with a glance meant ( to reduce the druggist's weight to 120 j pounds in five seconds, marched out as ■ stiff as a bean pole and crossed the , street after a lemonade flavored with ' peppermint essence. $ ’ARCITT OF Laborers.—There is | no excuse for tramps at the present , time, when common laborers ask and receive one dollar and fifty cents per day, and are scarce at that figure. The astounding condition of the I United States navy appears at last to have awakened the government at Washington to the necessity of doing something. However good its personnel may be, there can be no doubt that the material of the American , fleet is altogether inefficient. All , authorities are agreed “that the United States has no navy at all."
