-r- i»- - n.iwm Fl.*\ STRAW WASTED. j To she Farmers of rtdams am Comities. i j I will call your atteutiaii to a mat ' ter that concerns you as well as myself r The culture of flux is very imperfect!' r | utiderstootl bv a large majority of on; farmers i deal re to call your atten ticu to a few tery important points am r if proper consideration is given toy 1 views I have no doubt but that pecuni ary benefits will accrue to those wh< may sec proper to follow my instruc 1 tions. As a general rule our farmer! do not properly prepare the soil for fia.' s seed. The next evil is their sowing which is generally succeeded with : ■ crop of weeds ami fox-tails instead ol ilnt and seed. Two pecks of seed t< the aere may produce an average croj ' if the season is very favorable, bin i I three peeks to the acre is more certair . : taking everything into consideration The best soil for to sow flax oh is Sod ’ ground, and next best to that is good clean corn stubble. The ground should lie well prepared, well plovghe l and harrowed fine. Get a field roller and make your ground snioothe and fine. ■ then sow your seed and brush it in with a brush, and put no less than , three pecks to an acre of ground. Our farmers let tlm seed get too ripe before harvesting; the result is shrinkage in seed and a very unprofitable article to the crusher or manufacturer. Don’t let your flax get ripe before cutting; it is necessary, but wrong. Some think seed ought to have a brown color before it is fit to cut. This is a mis--1 I take. When seed is fairly formed in ■ the boll, and begins to harden a little, cut down your flax and let it ripen in the swath, [t will mature in S or 10 days. You will then have a quality of seed that will be desirable. Seed saved in this way will weigh six pounds more to the stroked bushel than seed that has ripened while standing. Try it once ■ i and you will lie convinced. The next matter of importance is taking care of the straw so it will realize for you the highest market price. The farmers of Huntington and adjoining counties are rotting their stia v before bringing it into the market and they are well pleased with the arrangement. as the cost of rotting amounts to but very little to the farmers as thev are provided with ever facility. This idea of rotting may not meet with much I favor: but I have no fears. After the I first experiment has been tried you will i net er want to sell given straw afteri wards when you can get from $2 to §3 1 per ton more for rotted than for unrotI led. For your information I will say ; that one man can spread out foul tons l per day. and this amount should cover j one acre of ground a» near as possible. . It must be shook out and spread very light so the grass underneath can be seen. There is one great advantage in light spreading: it rots and drys quickly. It will not rot*evenly if it is laid down in bunches, as the inside receives material benefit while the exposed parts will be properly rotted. There • need be no misunderstanding. When farmers came to market their straw and. iif I should find fault, say: "Well. I ; spread it out and did as you directed.” I ean tell how it has been treated. I sometimes get straw that is rotted enough before the seed is taken off. I I also get some that is about half rotted. These two qualities I can use by ' mixing with well rotted stock. I* The average price for different qual- ■ ities will be: For long, clean and well rotted straw. s(>: green and unrotted, $3. i The cost of rotting will not exceed till • cents per ton to those who own the ! ground and have cheap labor. Farmers having straw of last year's i crop will find a market for it. If furI ther information is wanted by any parties they will find me at the factory. Farmers wanting to buy seed for sowing can be accommodated by calling on Niblick. Crawford A sons. T. F. Mvi.ott. Decatur, Ind., Mar. 17, 1881. - - - - - • - ——L I Farm For Sale.
