EDUCATIONAL COLUMN. J. M. PEARCE, Editor. Concentration and Selt-Kell-atice. “I am afraid that I should have to go to sih >o'l awh'.le yet before I could teach,' is a remark often heard in conversation upon the subject of sehjolteaohing. The sire of this remark is the thought luat ali oue needs to know in order to be a school teaeher is contained within the covers of our text books Bosh ; young man, the sooner you get rid of that idea the better will it be for you. There is a word of four syllables which you should comprehend and make its meaning your law. your rule of life. It is concentration. Bend all your energies to one point,, go directly to that point looking neither to the right nor to the left. "Be not simply good—be good for something. Don’t attempt to teach school and feed sheep and build barns and read law and physics all at once. Concentrate your energies on the school, or on something else You have no proof that you can ■aster logic, ethics, astronomy, and natural philosophy as did Cicero. You are certainly not a DeVinci, who mastered all of the sciences—who was a great painter, a mathematician, metaphysician, musician, poet, sculptor, engineer, architect, chemist, botanist, astronomer —in fact accomplished in all. Neither are you a Dante, to sustain an argument against fourteen disputants in the University of Paris, and conquer them all. You may not even be a Haalitt. Nor does a century produce two Napoleons, whose nearly universal knowledge almost staggers belief While you may not be any of these you cau be a school-tea;her. By schoolteacher "I do not ui?an one who lives in a school house from nine a. m. four p m. from Monday until Friday, and then goes to the trustees on Saturday t« draw pay for oceupying the j school room I mean one whose heart i is where uis work is; who loves the school room ; who knows no distinction in his scholars except so far as they ■ themselves merit it; who loves his scholars; who is their watchful guardian and kind friend; whois studying all of the time in their behalf; who knows bis worth as a teacher, and dare assert himself; who feels that the school house is his castle and that no outside interference will be tolerated ; who teaches school after his own method. and cares not a snap for the comment of the parties to bo met with everywhere. Thue concentrate your mind, exclude other thoughts, and your book knowl- [ edge being sufficient, of course, —success is yours. Self-reliance follows concentration, and without self-reliance jou can do nothing Rely on yourself He who begins with crutches, will iren erally end with crutches. The man who dares not follow his own judgement but continually runs to others for advice will finally dwarf his own intellect and become a mere pygmy among men. Agate. Joint Township Institute.
