Hancock will probably be present at the inauguration of President Garfield. II - ■ ■ 1 “The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Goreruinent. by JEFFERSON Davis, is soon to be issued. At the municipal elections in Pennsylvania last Tuesday, the Demo crats elected mayors of Philadelphia, Piusburg and Erie. Eckley B.Coke, Democrat, was elected State senator from Wiikesbarre. AU these were successful only through handsome Demooratia gams. Did we hear somebody say the Democratic party is dead . Hon. Fernando Wood, whose death occurred at Hot Springs, Ark., last Monday, was a life-loan democrat. He was born in the year 1812, of Phil adelphianand Quaker birth. At the age of eight years he went to the city of New York; at nineteen he began business as a shipping merchant, and in nineteen more years he retried from business with a handsome fortune. He was elected to congress in 1841, and served in nine different congresses; was elected mayor of the city of New York three different times. At the time of his death he was chairman of rhe house committee on ways aud means, tho foremost position otf the floor. Q a r journalistic joru.heroi the Greenback organ at Biuiftm is as wild and irrational on the financial Question as Jack Stcdabaker himself. He wants to discuss the question with an effected view of enlightening the public, and all that sort of scuff. Now, Bro. McMahon, let us get down to the real subject and see what there is in it. To begin with (First.) you favor a greenback currency, and t&eeond) favor the issuing of that currency by the government. Now there are two points upon which we both agree. But here is where we differ: Tue government has obligated itself to pay off certain obligations, or debts, if you choose to call them, in gold coin. We believe that to be a sacred obligation, the violation of which would be nothing more nor less than repudiation. A e are willing to admit, however, that the manner in which that obligation was contracted was a very questionable one, but the people’s representatives in congress passed the bill that made the obligation one of law and it must now be accepted as a saored one ; and the person who would repudiate it has not the credit of the government at home and abroad at heart. Let the finances alone. They are all right now. Everybody is prosperous; there is plenty of money in circulation; every man that has anything to sell gets a good price in cash for it, and what more do you watt? All these things wers brought about by a Democratic congress; the “dollar .1 ..I saaa rpi d and tue DAocratic congress, and also over the veto of a stub executive who owes his title to a band of as desperate thieves and rase ria as ever disgraced a nation. The greenback party, as we have sai l many times before, is lead by enthusiasts; they smell strongly communism, and it would j>e a sorry thinu for this people if their wild ideas should ever become the law of the land Pleasant llHls Items. A TtiTiiiC Z».a i lie iia a ailing island Pit. Gotten up for Hie Delecfatiun ol a LUHtr Order ot Animals. Ni.w York, February 14.—A great dog light that sporting men had been talking about with lively expectation for many days, took place on Long Isl-1 and. Toe dogs were from Philadel-! phia aud Ne w York, and the articles of i agreement for the battle were drawn 1 up and signed a oat six weeks ago. It * was known that Tom Sylvester, a dog i( fancier of Philadelphia, had matched j his dog Paddy, of English bull-terrier I breed, against Charley Conkling’s Toby , F for SSOO a side. Paddy's regular weight is twenty seven pounds, but one of the j conditions of the match being that he i would enter the pit at twenty-ooe I gi pounds. Great pains had been taken l u t to reduce his weight. Paddy is an im- at ported English red aud white dog. with at a cherry-colon d nose, two years old and has never fought for money in this country before. Toby was aiso imported from Eng-1 land. He is a brindle and white, fee- i ' Jr formed and high atatiouod. but by L •«,’ side of pa !y he iteemed s aaiL j i Hie regular weightis twenty-five pounds. > t He hud been well-cured io:'by competent ' traiser-'. and was iu excellent condition. I'cl-y is throe years old aud had fought. two hard hattii** before.
luarfcn—iHmsw*wit:. • asa ii— wi', Both dogs tipped the scales yesterday at twenty one pounds to a hair. Two hundred aud fifty persons ussem- : bled in the pit at noon. A well-known sporting man from Philadelphia was agreed upon for referee and time-keep-er. The betting was lively at SIOO to $75 on Paddy, with many takers and much money was staked. The opening of the battle was excit- . ing. The dogs rushed together with loud snarls, every muscle rigid, and ! grappled with the greatest ferocity. The sharp teeth were quickly put to work, and the sharp snapping of the strongjaws told how desperate the fighting was. The dogs stood up and wrestled like alblets, for the advantage. Vvilhiu two minutes Toby was thrown ( on the floor, with Paddy’s teeth fastened iu his throat. Toby seemed to enjoy the shaking he got, and was soon ’ upon his feet again, but the strength ’ of his auagouist was tco much for him. and Toby went down again. All the ' while they were biting and tearing each other. j After two hours’ hard fighting. Toby turned the tables by throwing Paddy, , aud boring his lance-like teeth into his throat, shook him violently. To vary ’ his manner of fighting, he occasionally dragged the Philadelphia favorite , around the pit all the while, inflicting .. dreadlul punishment. , Three hours had pissed when Toby ] bad the call at SIOO to S7O. After , four hours had been spent the dog.g backed and dodged, let go and got new j holds with the skill an 1 wariness of . catch-as catch-can wrestlers. At the J end of four hours and a half both dogs e were nearly torn to pieces. f At this time the Philadelphians j were jubilant, as they saw Toby begin , to weaken again, although he had a tight hold ou Paddy's jaw Ihe latter had Toby down, aud dragged him , around the pit to “ corner. There i Paddv broke Toby's hold and caught . Toby’by the throat, evidently deter- , mined to choke him to death. Finally Conkling to save his dog Toby from being killed, offered $250 to ’ the backers of Paddy to make a draw | of the fight. Toby was I ben lying almost lifeless in the pit. (. onkling s ol- ' for was accepted by the backers of , Paddv, with the proviso that Conkling ’ should let Paddy have a- -;.:>-.h. This i was agreed to. and Paddy was taken , up Ij/his handier and sponged, off and , then letlouss, lie rushed over to Toby’s corner apparently as strong as ev--1 er, while poor Toby was lying nearly . dead, The referee decided all outside , bets off. Tho tine of this desperate was five horn's s#d ininutes ’ This is the logest nfight on record exi ec-pt a fight, that occurred twenty-five [ years ago in this city between Harry . P. Jennings’ Glasgow Billy and Hughy ' McNulty s dog Lew. This fight lasted five hours and twenty seven minutes, . and was won by Glasgow Billy, After the fight Toby fell into a fit and died.
