HE DEMOCRAT. - --—_ ———■— Bf*. BA. WILLIAMS. ; f 1.60 a Yxar in Advance. 5<C4 r Lit, iS LHASA, iMCKisbAY, Feb. 3, 1881. —lt now look* like Democrats wound organize the senate. —Our gjreenback cotemporary at Blufftun devotes a column or more to disprove to us that his party is not an auxiliary in sympathy with, if not in pay of, the Republican party. From the Timet' point of view the Democratic party, ty its majority in congress, aid not restore the silver dollar to its true value and did not make the greenback dollar worth one hundred cents. It would also have the Democratic party favoring banks of issue, when that is one of the things they do oppose, but not, however, because banks of issue are expensive to the producing classes but because it believes them a dangerous institution. The Democratic party believes in a paper money, convertible into coin on demand, and all to be issued direct from the government. The Democratic par ty is opposed to issuing several hundred millions of irredeemable rag dollars, because it would soon bring the wheels of commerce to a stand still, from which the people would have to suffer. Honest money or none, Mr. Times.
—Tom Foster, who for some unaccountable reason holds a seat in the senate chamber of Indiana from Allen county, has introduced a bill to regulate the height of freight cars. The bill is so inexpressibly silly that a railroad brakeman at Fort W.: .tie has volunteered h's services to « F from me u.— tki . j. ity. Should Fo»TEB's bill become a law the cost for transferring goods from ears not the lawful height, when crossing the State lines, would be enormous, saying nothing about the inconvenience and delay. Just such nincompoop mossbaAs as. Tom Foster are dead weights to the Democratic party. Tbev have no scope of information, and the result of an election of one of them to office is invariably detrimental to the party that elects them. They have a faculty, pu.uliarly their own, of bringing to their support a tatterdemalion class who have no regard for Jaw, order, or anything else above the habits of the professional tramp, and the result is, as above stated, adverse to the advancement of the Democratic party; and Foster is a shiuing light in the tramps’ brigade. The legislature of Indiana is Republican by a good working majority, therefore it should behoove the Democratic members to so guard themselves as to throw all responsibility for bad legisla tion on the shoulders of that party, but with-neb illiterate mossbacks as Foster popping up every day the future for the party is anything but bright. Ret the party rid itself of all such rubbish and we can then talk about success with some degree of consistency.
Mr. John DibksON, of Root township, hands us the following, which he clipped from an Indianapolis paper. It is a good move, as nearly every citizen residing along the line of the St. Marys river will affirm. Mr. Blli., of Allen county, is reported as follows : “Mr. Bell presented a petition from ninety-four land-owners in Allen and Adams counties, possessing the aggre gate of '5,255 acres of land, praying for legislation providing for clearing out beds of water courses, and for the better drainage of land, etc. He said this is a matter of considerable importance in his section of the State, and is no doubt of like importance in other portions of the commonwealth. The signers of this petition are fanners who desire to be relieved from the flow of water njiirh A <oi idlufd U*w... W. Z. Ketcham is the happiest man in Jefferson township. It's a girl. B. s. McPherson, James Ketcham and The*. Daily took a flying trip to Decatur last week. Barney Ford had ait arm broken and was otherwise injured by falling in the machinery of his saw mill one day last week. A party of sleighriders called on Geo. Ingle last Sunday on their return from Berne where they had been attend: ng & jubilee. The superb sleighing of the past few weeks has been enjoyed to the fullest extent by everyone who has had an opportunity to do so, especially since the weather has moderated. Wh .t can be more ungracious than i the reception one gets from the pavement these uncertain times when he gives up self-possession, understanding, uprightness nod dignity for a visit to the lower walks of life. Married.— At the residence of the bride a parents, on Jan. 28, 1881, bv Rev. B. F. A spy. Mr. Justus M. Kelly to Miss Etta lUekner, all of Adams county. The happy couple will please Mcept our congratulations. Weak before last M Vance Buck mas ’ ter was riding along the road some miscreant, who was concealed in am bush, fired a shot which came so close a to Mr. Buckmasfer that it stunned him ‘ for a moment but did no injury.
