THE DEMOCRAT. 11l M. K.U W 11.1.1 l lfuns: 11.50 a Year in .Advance. DSQAT UR, INDIANA, f«URSDAY, Dec. 23, 1880. —To our patrons, one and all, we wish a merry, merry Christmas. —There will be a meeting of Democratic editors of Indiana at Indianapolis on the sth of January next. M e acknowledge receipt of invitation. A wallpaper factory at Buffalo, N. V was destroyed by fire list Friday night, thirty lives having perished in the flames. The loss to property was about #250,000 : insured for sISO.OOO. — —The Milburn hotel at Toledo was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning. Henry Seaman, an employe of the wagon works, leaped from a window in the third story of the burning building and was instantly killed. — Mrs. Brown, on trial at Indianapolis for the murder of her husband is defended by a Mrs. Foster, of Clinton. lowa. Mrs. Foster was duly admitted to practice in Indiana and goes into the ease with remarkable vigor. Her fees will be paid by a female association of some kind at Indianapolis. —The hero of Canonchet. Ro’O’E Conkling, having bitten oft more than he eould ehaw in an epistolary controversy with the dignified senator from little Delawaie. Thomas Batari>. the Fort Wayne Ga-eth rushes to the rescue »f the haughty Roscoe by saying that Bayard is a liar. Now we den t suppose for a moment that it ever occurred to the (ro.teWe that possibly Conkling is a liar. The GattUe is reasonably fair sometimes in its criticisms of men, and then sometimes it isn’t. Charley Foster lias formally withdraw n as a candidate for senatorial honors from Ohio. Sherman will now have the field pretty much all to himself. The Chicago Tones says this i» recording to the programme arranged at Mentor by Grant, Conkling. Lo oan and Garfield. Tliat is Garfield has succeeded in securing the withdrawal of Foster, the result of which will be : Sherman in the senate, and Garfield will be saved the • trying ordeal " of asking him to come into bis cabinet. ——- —C. O. Myers, (Charly. as he is more familiarly known to the craft), late of the Kendallville Slandttrd. has purchased the Chattanooga CviMHeroial. and will soon become a full-fledged citizen of that State where niggers are put up at shooting matches —according 10 Ca.lßt.ee editorials in the Nt,ind"/-<l. Os course he never meant what he wrote and for that reason we wish him a whole hogshead full of success in his Tennessee home. His paper will be stalwart, but we would kind 0 like to lock at it once a week anyhow. —The I*e< ati n Democrat rather “sneering!/ remarks : ‘‘W hat has become of the fulminutiou of tin- tire Democratic editors who met at Fort Wayne recently’.' —A»e<7<i7/riM Airx Asnosueh thing ever appeared in The Democrat we cheerfully excuse Bro. Parker on the ground that he was trying to do two things at once, at the time when he penned the above. Those - editors took a step in the right din - tion. Bro. Parker, and we stoutly object to being placed on record as opposing their action. --A disgraceful scene cceuyrcd in the lower house of congress last Tuesday between Weaver, of lowa and Sparks, of Illinois. Such endearing terms’ as liar.” -‘scoundrel,” ‘ villain.’ etc,, were used without limit. If eaver said his fighting weight was one hundred and eighty-live pounds. Sparks said his was two hundred and fifteen pounds. Coats were being pulled and the two bellicose gentlemen were advancing rapidly toward each other when the speaker of the house called upon the aergeant-at-arms to restore order. The friends of each of the would-be pugilists gathered around them and for a time pandemonium was literally loose. The affair grew out of a misunderstanding between the two. The scene, wearing in the halls of the congress of a great nation, was a disgraceful one. (.EXEI A OLB.AMU*. sr RCS-TI-CVS. W. C. Long and Dan Jaeobi-on were in Celina last week. J. D.
