.T'yh'-- .. - —rm—- ”* — * Fire 111 till ,U»aUV St. Paul, N< r. !♦>.'—Tin burning of the State 1.- 'tie Asylum a* St. Deter, last night, proves to have been a Pterri >le (.lister, attended by a loss of from twenty to fifty lives. Only oik wing of the building was burnt d. The strut ture reeupied ten years in building and was completed thee years age at a cost of $500,000. The loss by the fire will be about *390,000, on which there ia no insurance. The cause ol the flit is unknown. It originated i: the basement of the north wing, whi was destroyed. The seem at the burn ing of the poor inmates in tin hoppit, were heartrending in the . xtreu:-. ' appalling a sight .has rarely ' .it ed. The patidhts in the annexed win. were males. Many of them refused leave the building at all. T) y nu] and down the halls screaming and cry lag. Those who could not be ceaseact forced out of the building be cam victims of the flames. The others wer saved, some by ladders and some b; leaping from the window.-. Some wer nearly nude, some shoeless and hatlesi and all were exposed to the bitter cold Many of the poor demented erased in mates Bed as though for their lives an, could not be overtaken. They wer half naked, and were to be seen in al directions flying in wild frigh . som running with bleeding feet away froti those who attempted to The- capacity of the building 1. . been tried to the utmost. There wer about six hyadred patients, and ever inch of space was utilised. What wil be done with these poor creatures, turn ed cut in the cold and their malady in creased by the excitement of the occa »ion, is a serious question There ar, two other buildings in the town whicl are used, but they are already crowdet to their full capacity. The asylum it Rochester is full, and will doubtless b< unable to provide accommodations foany of the inmates of St. Peter wlr were turned out in the cold by the ter rible catastrophe. As a special dispatch says : While the flame - were slowly progressing, the matron of the female department made all haste to get the inmates out, and many of them ran shrieking into the snowdrifts in their night clothes, even burying themselves in the snow and Lad to be dragged into the barns and sheds, while these near by wrapped blanket? and shawls around them Hence, intense suffering could not be avoided, as they had to be taken about fiftat-n or twenty rids through the snow to the nearest shelter which was on a hill immediately in the rear of the south wing. T1 irttial ni’iiri- r rat’d cannot k „ ■ w> present time, ns many arc known to have wandered away in th-- intense excitement that prevailed. Several women were taken out of some of th-' rovms and halls, and several persons were get out into the balls when they seemed determined to return to the flames. Owe room, occupied l.y ivo men, was broken into, and while one of the occupants bad to he dm/ ed out. the other was determined to remain in Lie warm L i, and when dragged out he insisted on waiting to be dre.-sed. An old man brought here from Min ncapclis was taken out dead. The principal cause of delay in getting -- stream of water on the lire from the hospital hose arose from the fact that it had not been in use for so long that it required to be wet from end to end on the outside with hot water. Meantime the flames spread very rapidly from the basement, filling the halls with smoke, and making it impossible to do anything at saving the inmates of the north wing, only by putting up ladders and prying off fire screens from deers, taking the occupant? out and actually carrying them down without clothing in many cases. At some of the windows there were three or four begging to be saved from death while the flames were bursting from the ad joining windows. One poor fellow was dragged through a half open screen su-i badly mangled. A special dispatch from St. Peter at 3 p. m says it is still difficult to get at the names and particulars of the awful calamity. A list of those killed and hurt is not now obtainable. Dr. Bartlett, superintendent of the asylum, says that there are not more than twelve lives lost, and probably as many J XX P ’ • mui l «uiu ouuciitig trvtn tne outer eold of last night. Indeed, more people are believed to be injured and dying from exposure to the weather than from burns. Other people say that as many as twenty insane people either perished in the flames or died on the cold bills during the night. So many patients have disappeared that it cannot be told who are dead and who ran away. The suffering has been terrible. Hundreds of the patients arc as helpless as children, and are seemingly shocked and dazed soas to render them almost insensible. Gov. Pillsbury heads a band of workers who are doing everything possible tor the jomfort ot the distressed. The Governor says he can make arrangements for the acoomuiodutiou of most of the insane at Bt. Peter in the hospital houses. Mr. Carson, of Minneapolis Lai found tho dead body of his fath-er-in-law, Mr. Abrams. The damage to the ix*j»ital buildipg will amount tc <209,0W.
