from first page.) South will certainly not object. The South is tired of being regarded as a beggar at the doors of the National Capital, and simply asks raposc and relief from that sbi-se of apprehension ■ created by Republican rule, in order that she may go forward in solving the problem of building up her industries and improving her natural advantages We are building railroads and manufactories. and taking steps to bring emigrants to our rich lands. Seven hundred thousand spindles are now running in the South, and the number , will be doubled within eighteen months. New Orleans and Texas are negotia- | ting .to bring the great eastern through the jetties. Barye lines are now being formed and elevators constructed to handle 500,000 bushels of grain per week. We are not thinking of claims againU the government. The real South has bucked’ her losses long ago. and is looking ahead not behind her. If all the so-called Southern claims were pitched in the Potomac River, the South would not complain. Mad. Wells of Returning Board fame, and the persons interested with him would lose some #400.000 : but the real representative people of the South have little or no interest in the question. The Republican scheme for defeating the popular vote in Indiana has come to light to-day. The execution of the plot has been intrusted to the | notorious John 1. Davenport, of New York, who is to have supreme control of Republican operations in Indiana on : election day. The general plan is the , same which has rendered Davenport and his iron cages so infamous in New York. Large numbers of affidavits are being prepared in blank, and it is in- , tended to arrest thousands of Demo-! cratic voters and keep them locked up until after the close of the polls. The managers at Republican head-quarters here are apprehensive that popular indignation will be aroused in Indiana by the importation of the New York satrap to take charge of affairs in that ’ State, and have been trying to train some one in his place. It has now been resolved, however, to let Davenport re main in Indiana and carry out .the scheme at all hazards, as the only hope far carrying the State. It should be I remembered that Davenport's infamous operations in New York were partially successful only because they were unexpected. That the Republican National Committee should determine to ! resort to such tactics among the free ' voters of the west is the best evidence of the desperation of their cause. The Hancock Republicans are to hold another great meeting during the coming week, which will be addressed , by General Butterfield and General I Daniel E. Sickles, who declared for Hancock and English at the great rati-I fication meeting last Thursday. Frank Loslie's Weekly. man of Mr. Gladstone’s atre to gather j his lost strength. Weeks before his seizure he had begun to look aged and feeble, and though somewhat improved, looks so still. Lord Beaconsfield many times during his term of office looked to broken that one wondered how he kept his feet. Such are the penalties of power. Americans who were present at the 1 two ni«Jits obstructive debates of the ' } arnell party in the House of Commons say they were perfectly conducted. The chiefs ot the legions and the ; divisional commanders kept steadily at work all night. There was not a hitch or hah. Every man was at hig post. l ready U> enter the arena at the beck of I his leader. It was, of course, quite useless and served no end. but as an idle display it must be scored among the most brilliant achievements of the i Irish party.
