Scorpion Whipped by a Lizard. [Virginia (Nev.) Enterprise ] George Jennings of Six-mile Canyon, describes a queer battle which he saw between a lizard and a scorpion. He says the lizard—a black one, about eight inches in length—came out of a pile of lumber, and his attention was attracted to it by seeing it bobing its head up and down, occasionly creeping forward a foot or two. Looking in the direction in which the lizard was creeping Jennings saw a scorpion, four inches in length, sitting upon a pile of moist sand. Thinking the lizard meant to attack the scorpion. Jennings was careful to do nothing that would disturb either. The lizard moved close to the scorpion, when it braced itself on its fore feet and began bobing its head. The scorpion erected its tail, which it vibrated in a threatening manner. The lizard circled around the scorpion, occasionly halting to bow at him. At length the scorpion attempted to crawl away. The lizard then darted upon him adroitly, seized him by the last joint of the tail—that which contains the poi-san-sack and at the point of which is situated the sting. Having this hold of the scorpion the lizard was safe from its sting, but had apparently no means of doing further damage. The scorpion twisted himself about and tried to get hold of the lizatd with his claws, which are like the claws of a lobster or crawfish, where upon the lizard shook him as a dog would shake a rat. This was repeated dozens of times, the lizard resting after each shaking, until the scorpion began to go for him with his nippers. The battle lasted over half an hour. At last the scorpion no longer showed fight, and the lizard dragged him away into the lumber pile. Mr. Jennings says he has been in the country twenty years, but never before saw a battle of the kind, and had no idea that a lizard would attack a scorpion.
