/ Hope Deferred. / [Bryan (0.) Democrat.] , Ze of the most regular visitors to / U. S. Express office at Bryan is a Xnfinding youth of about twenty brief /summers, who puts in his appearance every day or two and asks Mr. Hopkins if there is anything for him. The unvarying answer is “not yet, and the disappointed young man turns away, only to repeat his visit a day or two later. This is the why of it: Sometime in April the young man read an advertisement in a city paper, in which the advertiser offered to send a Creedmoor rifle, English walnut stock, pistol grip, silver mounted. Vernier sights, wind gauge, spirit level, 14 calibre —warranted to knock a squirrel’s eye out at a thousand yards —together with all the contrivances and appurtenances necesx • J < sary to properly load the cartridges,
etc., for the insignificant sum of $6.00. The young man took the bait and forwarded the money and his address, ■which was as promptly acknowledged, and he has been waiting, sadly waiting since the 15th of May the arrival of the gun, but it arriveth not. Mhen at the office he shook his head doub'jngly an d remarked that he feared that advertiser was a dam . swindle. Moral: Put your trust in cheap goods advertisemSyts in city paper. He kissed the tip of hL fingers at a girl acoss the street And the boot of her big broths raised him clean ftom of his feth He picked himself up and went strait/ home, though his bones they ached with pain. •He rubbed Eclectric Oil-well in. he’s well, but won’t kiss his fingers again. Some remarkabW developments have been made by oir census enumerators as they passed through the country in search of statistics. It was found that in Clear spring township there was a family exiting /and barely existing, too) in the lowest condition of poverty, ignorancf and wretchedness. It is fl of the husband and wife and hildren, two of whom were born year and are not twins. Not one nily can read or write and a newspaper is a thing unknown The faintest thought of edcivilization or refinement in / any form, never had the slightest glimI mering in their benighted minds. It \ does not seem possible that such a «?pndi* : A»\ exist in this country in the nineteenth century.
