Two Minus Two Is Cleveland Formula For First NFL Championship Since 1955

By STEVE SNIDER UPI Sports Writer CLEVELAND (UP() — The Cleveland Browns are champions of the National Football League today because quarterback Frank Ryan, who holds a masters degree in higher mathematics, remefnbered his simple arithmetic. Two minus two is zfero, reasoned Frank, and with (‘Mr. Zero” covering wide-open flanker .back Gary Collins it took only basic subtraction and an accurate passing arm to lob three touchdown throws to Gary as the Browns swept majestically to the NFL Indiana Risks Its Record In Tourney By United Press International Indiana risks its perfect status and high national ratings in the Memphis State Invitational and Evansville opens defense of its Indiana Collegiate Conference basketball title this week. Indiana’s Hoosiers, winners of their first seven games, go atough and once-beaten St. Louis tonight and a victory would advance them to the title scrap Tuesday night against the Memphis State-Southern Methodist survivor. Six-game winner Evansville, the No. 1 small college quintet in the nation, faces a three-game slate. The Aces rolled over visiting Massachusetts Saturday, 11382, with Larry Humes pumping in 29 points. Purdue, 92-76 loser to Oregon in the Far West Classic at Portland Saturday, despite Dave Schellhase’s 40 points, meets Portland in Tuesday’s consolation round. Notre Dame plays on the road twice this week, against Louisville, Ky., Tuesday, and Bradley at Chicago Thursday. Former Resident Spending Holidays Iri County Jail Elvin L. Adkins, 22, a former local resident, spent the Christmas holiday in the Adams county jail, and will have to spend the New Year’s holiday in the same place. Adkins, due to be released Sunday morning after serving 30 days in jail, received another 30-day sentence before he got even one step out of the local lockup. Richard J. Sullivan, serving as city court judge -pro tern several months ago, had given Adkins a 30-day sentence on a traffic violation. The sentence -was suspended provided Adkms was not arrested within the following 12 months. First Term On November 18, he was back in city court and found guilty of assault and battery. Judge John B. Stults gave him a 30-day sentence, in addition to a $25 and costs fine. That sentence was concluded Sunday, at which time the previous suspension was revoked. At the time Adkins was sentenced by Judge Stults, he wqj; served a warrant by city police from Justice of the Peace court, where he has allegedly failed to, appear on a reckless driving: charge. When he has completed] the second 30-day sentence, he will! face that charge in J. P. court. 1

championship Sunday by demolishing the favored Baltimore Colts, 27-0 “They were doubling on Paul Warfield so that had to leave somebody open,” said Collins, I.U. Chances For Devaney Reported Poor LINCOLN, Neb. (UPI) — Reports here indicated today Indiana University • would have little chance at wooing football coach Paul Devaney away from Nebraska. Avery E. Forke, Lincoln businessman and chairman of a life insurance fund drive for the coach, reported Saturday the campaign to finance Devaney's SIOO,OOO life insurance policy is coming along fine. Devaney, who in three years with the Cornhuskers compiled a 28-4 record, was under consideration by the University of Miami last year but turned the offer down. The support of fans for his life insurance policy, taken out in 1962, was believed one of the primary reasons for the refusal. • TU officials said earlier this last week they were interested in Devaney as a replacement for Phil Dickens', who resigned as head football coach. They asked and recevied .permission from Nebraska Athletic Director W. H. Dye to confer with the Cornhusker coach. Devaney reported from Texas, where he and his team were preparing for the Cotton Bowl game with Arkansas, that he had not been contacted as of Saturday by anyone from Indiana. whose three TD receptions set a league title game record. "It just happened to be me.” Infrequent Target Warfield, a rookie out of Ohio State and Cleveland’s top receiver, caught only one pass for 13 yards while the Colts were double-team-ing him with corner back Lenny Lyles and right safety Jim Welch. Collins caught only five but three were money in the bank for touchdowns from 18, 42 and 51 yards out. The sudden collapse of the Colts in the third period was a complete shock to the 79,544 packed into Cleveland's vast stadium trying to keep warm in a 20 mile an hour wind off Lake Erie that had the thermometer right at the freezing point. For 33 minutes and 21 seconds of actual playing time, the Brown? and the Colts not only were scoreless but so locked in a defensive struggle it appeared a field goal somewhere along the line would decide the 45th NFL title and the difference between an SB,OOO share for the winners or $5,000 for the losers. At 3:21 of the third period, big old Lou Groza booted a 43-yard field to shatter the futility. Hits First TD At 6:26, after the superb Jimmy Brown had contributed a 46-yard run to his day’s total of

114 yards in 27 carries, Ryan fired his first strike to Collins. At 8:48, with the Browns in possession on Baltimore's 42 as a result of the second windblown punt by Tim Gilburg good for only 22 yards, Ryan unloaded another one to Collines for 42 yards to complete a 17-point third period splurge. Groza popped over his second field goal from the 10 at the start of the fourth period and Ryan put some' more arithmetic to work by pitching a 51-yard touchdown to Collins.
