SOCIAL SECURITY QUIZ (Editor’s Note) Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any questions you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday. * 1. Q — I am a widower and I’ve been retired by my company this year. I get $l2O a month from Social security. Recently, my former employer called me about part-time work at S2OO per month for all of next year. Can I get any benefits next year while I’m earning $2400? A— Yes, you would be entitled to receive $490 in social security benefits. If you didn’t work, you would get $1440. While working you lose $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn above SI2OO and under SI7OO. For every $1 you earn over SI7OO you lose $1 of benefits. In your case, you lose $950 in fenefits for your $2400 earnings, leaving you $490 in benefits. 2. Q—l was 72 years old in May of last year and I earned S2OOO in wages. I reported these wages to the Social Security Administration early this year. I will also earn about S2OOO this year in wages. Do I have to report these earnings to social security at the end of this year? A—You need not report earnings for this year since you were over 72 in all months of the year. You can receive all your benefits, regardless of your earnings, beginning with the month in which you reach 72. 3. Q—l retired last year and began getting my monthly social security checks. This spring I accepted a job as City Parks Superintendent at a yearly salary of S4OOO. Since I am working, do I have to notify the Social security office to stop my checks? A—You must report your work at once to social security. You can do this by filling out and mailing a post card form, OAC 669. You probably were given this form when you applied for benefits. If you can’t find it, visit your social security offfice to complete the form. 4 Q—l win be 65 in December, and my employer wants me to keep working on a part-time basis at $l5O a month. If I accept this job/ will I be able to get < social security benefits at the same time? A—Yon might not be entitled to any social security benefits this year, but you may be entitle® to benefits for some months next year. You should visit your social security office as soon as possible and they will help you determine what benefits you would be able to receive.
