March of Dimes Volunteers Help Parents of Birth Defects Children
Picture a child crippled I by a severe birth defect. A tragedy? Unmistakably, I But how aevere are the effects on the parents of this child? What is the extent of their shock and suffering? Dr. Hans ZellWeger, a wellknown professor of pediatrics and genetics at the State Univesity of lowa College of Medicine and medical director of the March of Dimes-sup-ported Birth Defects Center there, reports that in his experience 80 per cent of the parents of defective babies harbor unwarranted feelings of guilt. He believes that they, like their afflicted child, need help. For that reason he ir about to organize group therapy "classes" in which troubled parents can talk among themselves and with medical experts to discuss the problems created by this family tragedy. Dr. Zellweger points out that more than a quarter of a mil-, lion babies are born every year in the Uriited States with birth defects— among them blindness, deafness, missing extremities, imperfect spines and nervous systems, and many other crippling disorders. Feelings of guilt and humiliation in the parents of these children are commonplace and have been for centuries. He explains that unfortunately this sense of shame persists even in the "enlightened” BOth century, although the individual pediatrician today does all he or she efin to combat it. Help Is Expanding Help for those grief- and guilt-stricken parents is being provided by March of Dimes chapters on a growing scale in several sections of the country. "Actually, most of these parents aren’t in need of medical treatment, but they are in need of some psychiatric help and the opportunity to talk over their problems with others similarly afflicted,” according to Dr. Virginia Apgar, director of the division of congenital malformations of The National Foundation-March of Dimes.

Above, at Mankato, Minn., parents and members of March of Dimes chapter listen to lecture on birth defects by Dr. Warren Warwick, pediatrician, of University of Minnesota Medical School.
“Also, they are in need of a healthy dose of truth about birth defects,” she adds, "That truth is that so far as medical science knows, by far the majority of parents of a defective baby have no reason to reproach themselves, or to point the finger of suspicion at the other partner in marriage.” March of Dimes chapters in five Minnesota counties now hold meetings of parents each month to discuss means of riddine themselves of their unjustified feelings of self-re-proach. Usually they are also addressed by a pediatrician and are informed about the progress of March of Dimes research grants in birth defects at leading universityaffiliated medical centers and .laboratories across the nation. years grew cold? The church has never known exactly what to make of this story. Some count it a legend that has found its way into the original story. Some supply details not In the Bible. , They did not know who ho was 1 The wise men celled the Child they were seeking "King of the Jews.” Followers of this Child would find higher names for him in time. They would call him Savior, Son of God, even God only-begotten. It is very doubt- ; ful whether these visitors could have passed a good examination in "Christology.” But they brought their gifts all the same. If they had known who he was, ; they might have come or sent messengers, from time to time during the years. They might have waited till the Child was grown, and sent "some one to learn what wisdom would come from his mind. When the story of his life had been written, they ; might have asked for a copy. No,; all they saw was a Child born to be a king. That he would be king of the world and not of the 1 Jews only, that his throne would be not in Jerusalem’s doomed walls but in the hearts of men, i they did not know and could not know. They did not wait till they knew all about him before they made their gifts. They knelt to him as the highest they knew. They paid him tribute they paid no other. So it may be with us today. Do you know who Jesus is? The wisest man can never quite put into words the full meaning of Christ. But do you know his superior? Some superChrist? There is none on the road, none promised to mankind. It will be time to apeak of a greater if God sends one. Meanwhile what Christ requires is loy« alty, not explanation. Following brings understanding. They, brought what they had The gifts are interesting. Gold we can understand; that would befit a king. But myrrh and frankincense? These were spices such as one could buy in any bazaar. For some reason it has always been supposed that these wise men were rich, even kings. Alas, wise men are not always rich in this world’s goods. It da just as likely that they had spent all they had simply on the journey. and ooald spare only the little they had left for gifts. There was nothing to go with the gold; no pearls, no silver, no jewels. These were humble gifts, myrrh and frankincense; but if that was all they had, they gave Jt and gladly. So it may be with us. We read stories of great and gifted men, and we think how much we could do for the kingdom of God if we were only men like Saint Paul, Saint Augustine, Martin Luther William Carey. We doubt whether we could really endure to the end as martyrs if we fell into the hands of communist secret police. So because we cannot offer Christ great heroism, or outstanding genius, or immense wealth, we offer nothing at all. They did not ask Io be repaid The gifts of the wise men were gifts, not loans. Not bribes. These men sent no statement of accounts payable. They did not think the Child, even a royal child, owed them some generosity in return. They were never repaid, never reimbursed for the expense of the long journey. A gift from them was a true gift, it was not something on account. Once more a thought for these days when it is still Christmas; how many of our gifts we made, how many of the generous thoughts wo had, how much of what we may have done for Christ in his church, was really given? rtva£re circuit " United Brethren in Christ John O. I want to say that Adams county can be proud of this splendid hospital in their midst being urgler the management of an able Christian, Thurman I. Drew, and his able staff of doctors and nurses, who do all in their power to make your stay here as comfortable as possible. I have never before been in a hospital where so much kindness is shown to the patients, and the Lord has given me a great opportunity to witness for Him. Wife and I feel the effects of the prayers that are being offered up to God in this hour of need by the different pastors of this area, and God’s people from near and far that He will get glory out of an illness. We did not realize we had so many friends, and we do pray and trust we will meet you all in that “Land Where We Never Grow Old.” We wish you all a most Merry Christmas and a Happy arid Fruitful New Year in God’s work, and that you will keep up this Christmas spirit during your journey through life.
