It is becoming increasingly popular to poetize the family gossip of the year in the form of a greeting card to friends and relatives. 3-DAY FESTIVAL Christmas In Turkey Is a threeday festival. Christian Turks observe the season by visiting and entertaining and coffee, sweetmeats, fruit and sometimes sour milk are holiday treats. FAMILY AFFAIR Christmas is celebrated by more than a half million Christians in the predominantly Moslem country of Pakistan and the Yule season corresponds roughly to ours. It is a “family” festival as it is all over the world. Syrian Observance Os Christmas Is Quiet The holiday season in Syria extends from December 4, Saint Barbara’s Day, until January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. The Christmas observance la relatively quiet, but January 1, the Day as the Circumcision — is a day of rejoicing marked by the exchanging of gifts. January 2 ig a visiting day for women. , v An old Syrian belief is that on Epiphany Eve every tree bends its trunk and inclines its branches in homagg to the Christ Child. , SWISS TREAT A special holiday treat for the Swiss is “birewegge”, a pear cake which contains a spicy, flavorful concentrate from air-dried pears mixed with raisins and resembling a shiny loaf of bread. Also traditional is a Christmas cookie, the “Tirggel,” said to have originated aa an early German sacrificial cake. THE CANDLE No one is quite sure, but some hold that the custom of having a Christmas candle comes to us from baronial days when a huge Yqle candle was prepared to furnish the light at the high table |hroughout the holiday festiv-

Then freeie them. Dip the mold quickly into warm water and slide the balls into the punch when you are ready to serve. SPICED CRANBERRY PUNCH . 1 pound cranberries— h cup water | iJSrtiyy** | flU|S!nstomqßjutoe 1 tablespoon whole cloves Cook cranberries, watap and cloves until skins of cranberries burst — approximately 8 minutes. Be sure cranberries are soft. Strain through cheese cloth. Mix pulp with H cup water. Mix well and strain again. Heat, add augar and boil two minutes. Just before serving, add lemon juice. (To vary this punch you may try substituting some very thin slices of lemon and brash mint leaves for the pineapple balls.)

Holly Subject Os Many Superstitions Holly has long been the sub ject of many superstitions. Some ancients believed it had magic charms and would protect them from dangers. Early Britons considered it unlucky, however, to bring holly into the house before Christmas Eve. It was also believed that smooth leaves on the holly indifated the wffe would "rule" the household during the year ahead; rough leaves indicated the husband would be the ••boss."
