“Christmas Carpenters” Rebuild Burned Negro Church
RIPLEY, Miss. (UPI) - The youh stood against a backdrop of hustling college students, stacked lumber "and charred ground. "Some of us were in Mississippi when the church burned," said Joe Von Korff, a 19-year-old collegian from Mlnneaplis, Minn. "We thought it would be Casting Shipments Above 1963 Figures If fourth quarter shipments of gray, ductile, and high alloy iron castings keep pace with the high rate established during the first nine months of 1964, nidustrv shipments for the year should reach 14.3 million tons — 12% ahead of last year. Dollar value of shipments would rise from $3-blllion in 1963 to 83.65-billion for the durrent year —- up 21%. The Decatur Casting company is a member of the Gray Iron Foundary Association. Donald H. Workman, executive Vice president of the Iron castings trade association, noted that iron foundry operating rates for the first eleven months are substantially above 1963 levels, according to a continuing monthly survey Conducted by the Gray and Ductile Iron Founders' Society. The industry’s operating rate for November was 84% of ideal capacity — down from the October level of 96% but an increase of three percentage points over the same month last year. This ideal capacity is a theoretical measurement of the level at which I jundries produce and ship cantings most efficiently. *' In the Northern Indiana area,

a good Christmas project to rtbuild it." Von Korff is part of a group of do-it-yourself church builders which had adopted the title of "Carpenters for Christmas.” Composed of about 25 college students, mainly from Oberlin College (Ohio), three professors and a Negro con’ractor, the group plans to spend its Christmas vacation rebuilding the Antioch Baptist Church. The church, one of about 40 houses of worship either damaged or destroyed by fire in Mississippi during the past six months, went up in flames last
November shipments were 84% of ideal capacity, down from the October level of 95%. During November. 1963, Northern Indiana area shipments were 81% of capacity, Rubstan’ial Increase Workman also commented that the industry's average operating rate for the first eleven months of this year stands at 88.6% a substantial 13% increase over last year's comparable level of 78.6%. According to the U. S. department of commerce, iron castings shipments for the first nine months of this year (latest figures available) totaled 10,691,000 tons, up 12% over the 9,522.000 tons shipped during the first nine months of isat year. Ductile iron shipments for this period totaled 374.200 tons, an increase of 42% over the find nine months of 1963. Castings produced from gray, ductile and high alloy irons are used extensively a; components ill the automobile, machine tool, agricultural, construction, mining and must other industries.
Oct. 31. Used as a "freedom house” in a summer voter registration drive, the church had been the scene of a mass civil rights meeting a few hours before its destruction.’ Korff, a co-chairman of the rebuilding project, was in Mississippi when the incident happened. He and several other Oberlin students returned to the school and organized a fundraising campaign for construction material. The entire Oberlin student body donated cash to finance the project, many giving up their lunch money. Christmas cards and church greetings also were sold in Ohio to raise funds. A gronp of "carpenters" then was organized on the Oberlin campus and it was joined by

Don’t throw away your old Christmas tree, for it can be useful after the holiday season. For Instance, you can make it into a bird feeder. Prop it up in the yard near the kitchen door, pour melted fat over it and before the fat hardens, sprinkle wild bird seed on it. You can add chunks of apples, nuts, cranberries, raisins or bread crumbs. These will attract birds and you can enjoy watching them go after the delicacies. There are many uses for Christmas tree branches as greenery, either as indoor or outdoor decorations and for winter corsages. Flower arrangement foliage is another use. Good flower arrangements need foliage to help them oUt. Water House Plants Proper watering is the key to house plant siiccess. Water your house plants well before they wilt. Dig into the soil about one-half inch and if it is dry nt that level, water thoroughly. Add water at the top of the pot until you notice moisture dripping gradually from the bottom of the pot. If water runs rapidly from the bottom, chances are it’s draining down the sides. If this happens, wait a few minutes, then

the three professors and Burrell L. Scott, a Negro mason Contractor from Cleveland. Traveling the 800 miles by automobile, the “carpenters" arrived in this small northeast Mississippi town in two groups Sunday and Monday. The volunteers were housed with Negro families in the ru'al area and began work immediately on rebuilding the church. Negro members of the congregation earlier had started work on the project. The group is resigned to a spartan Christmas. “We’ll miss not being with our families, of course," Von Korff said. "But we felt this was something certainly worthwhile. Most of us hope to find time to visit our families next month."
add more water until the entire roil mass is moist. You can water the plants from the bottom instead of from the top. Set the pot in water until ’ moisture shows on the top of the soil, then remove the pot and let the excess moisture drip out. Never leave them standing m water. About all you have to do birther is fertilize the plants only m the spring and summer, and give them proper light. Although some plants require more light than others, all flowering plants need moderately bright lignt to keep them in good condition. Direct Aunlight is bad for plants that are in bloom. since the sun's heat wilts flowers quickly. Dairy Herd Stalls Free stalls for the dairy herd should have six inches of bedding under the cow to provide insulation from the cold ground. This enables the cow’s bodv heat to quickly warm up the bedded area when she lays down. Cows will be uncomfortable if they r.re forced to use free stalls that have only limestone or dirt in them. Sawdust, cobs as they come from the sheller. chopped corn stalks or straw can be used to be free stalls. ,

The sta’e’s winter wheat crop in 1964 was 51,465,000 bushels with a 1959-64 average of 42,434,000 bushels. If the estimate holds true when the crop, planted during the crop is harvested next spring, Indiana again will rank eighth among winter wheatproducing states.
