Buffalo Bills Cop Eastern Division Title
BOSTON (UPI)-Dou Saban’s last laugh was a resounding ho-tio-ho. Sabah, coach of the new champions of the American Football Leageu’s Eastern Division, the Buffalo Bills, was quaffing champagne and sounding for all the world like Santa Claus. He Was enjoying the sweetest revenge of his life, a divisional title victory over the Boston Patriot club that had given him the gate in 1961. Saban was returning the compliment in spades and red ribbons. Saban’s Bills had, in Boston's snow-shrouded Fenway Park, scored a decisive 24-14 victory over the Patriots. The win meant that the Bills will play host to the Western Division winners, the San Biego Chargers, in the AFL championship game at Buffalo next Saturday. Bradley To Forego Pro Ball Next Year PRINCETON, N. J. (UPI) — Princeton University basketball ace Bill Bradley will forego playing professional basketball next year in order to accept a Rhodes scholarship. Bradley was one of 32 young men appointed Sunday for the scholarship which gives him two years of study at Oxford University, England. Decatur Is Third In Reserve Tournament Decatur high school took consolation honors in a four-team reserve basketball tournament played at Portland Saturday. Tbe Bluffton reserves won championship honors, defeating Decatur, 44-40, in the morning, and nosing out Portland, 51-48, in the afternoon title game. After the loss to Bluffton, the Decaturites squeezed out a 53-51 decision over Hartford City in the consolation game. Portland had defeated Hartford City by 5250 in three overtimes in the morning. ' Komets Are Beaten On Home Ice Saturday The Fort Wayne Komets, after registering back-to-back road victories earlier in the week, came hofiW Satuii&hy night to drop, a 4-3 decision to the Port Huron Flags at Memorial Coliseumr. The Flags scored three times in the first period, but the K’s scored once in the second period and twice more in the final stanza to tie the count at 3-3. Less than a minute after Fort Wayne tied the score, however, former Komet Lloyd Maxfield, playercoach of the Flags, tallied what proved to be the winning counter. Johnny Goodwin, Reg Primeau and Bill Orban scored the Komets goals. The K’s now in third place in the IHL, played in Dayton Tuesday night and host Des Moines next Saturday night.
The Bills were anxious to return home from Boston to continue their celebration and to take up planning for the San Diego game. They obviously planned to do better against the Chargers than Boston did In the 1963 tftle playoff—« resounding 51-10 San Diego victory. Saban summarized his squad’s victory over Mike Hotovak’s Patriots in a single word; “Kemp.” He was speaking of old pro quarterback Jack Kemp, a veteran used sparingly in recent weeks while young Daryl Lamonica brought the Bills down Selma Edges By Geneva, 67-66 The Geneva Cardinals dropped below the .500 mark Saturday night, as they suffered a 67-66 loss at Selma of Delaware Cdwnty. The Cardinals trailed throughout the game, but rallied 29 points in the final quarter and nearly pulled a victory out of the fire. With four seconds remaining, a Geneva player missed the first of a one and one free throw opportunity, as his team trailed by two. Selma, however, was called for a technical foul. This free throw was converted and the Cards took the ball out of bounds, only to have a desperation shot blocked. Selma grabbed a 22-15 lead one period, led by a 34-29 score at halftime, and boosted their margin to 49-37 entering the final stanza. Bobo of the hosts led all scorers with 22 points, while big Jim Meshberger topped the Cards with 20. Sophomore Ted Habegger had 15 and Ron Bollenbacher 13 for Geneva. Geneva is the only Adams County team in action this week, playing at Winchester Tuesday night where they seek to even their present 3-4 record. to the final game with ah 11** record. Saban kept toe identity of his starting quarterback a secret right up to the delayed game starting time at Boston. He had informed Kemp only 24 hours earlier that it was his assignment to beat Bostob. Kemp passed magnificently through snowflakes that actually obscured his receivers on occasion. , Lions Expected To Fire Coaches Today DETROIT (UPI) — Three assistant coaches of the Detroit Lions probably will be fired today with veteran players Joe Schmidt and Yale Lary likely to become player-coaches. Team owner William Clay Ford said Sunday night an announcement concerning the three Doll and Bob Nussbaumer — would be made about 3 p.m., today. He is scheduled to have his third conference in five days with head Coach George Wilson at that time. However, H has been learned by United Press International that Ford has already ordered the ouster of the three aides and that he wants Schmidt to become defensive line coach and Lary defensive backfield coach. As of Sunday he had not talked either player into signing a contract to coach and play in 1965. And UPI also learned that if Wilson objects too strenuously, Ford will give him his walking papers, too. A team official said, “Ford plans to listen to George one more time before lowering the boom. And that may be the last time the two will talk business since these firings are really a rap at Wilson’s coaching, too.” The changes resulted from player complaints to Ford that they were not getting the proper coaching from assistants. Players voiced the opinion that they could have won the National Football League’s Western Conference title this season with better tutoring. Tbe Lions finished fourth with a ’ 7-5-2 record. Hoagland Handed sth Loss Saturday Night The Hoagland Wildcats suffered their fifth setback in nine games this season, as they lost a 77-70 decision to Churubusco Saturday night in the Wildcat gymnasium. The visitors jumped into a big 21-10 lead after one period, but Hoagland cut the margin to 4034 by halftime. Churubusco scored 20 points in the third stanza and took a 60-50 lead into the final period. Gary Schane led the Wildcat scoring with 21 tallies, while Duand Heckler added 11.
