Cerebral Raley Medical rriindn have grappled with many dread diseases fend won. Now another challenge has been taken up as scientists focus on the nation’s number one crippler of children—cerebral palsy. Just in the last few years a fund of knowledge has been gained that is making it poeoible to protect many infanta from this form of brain damage which affects muscular control and may hinder a child’s ability to organize what he feels, hears and sees. We know now that the greatest period of danger is before and at birth and that better health care of the mother and improved practices in the delivery room will ussure safer delivery and healthier children. Our knowledge is not extensive enough, however, to prevent the birth of 25,000 cerebral palsy infants each year. y I These handicapped children need all the help, understanding, care and treatment that we can offer them so that they can live a meaningful life despite their disability. This is the concern of the United Cerebral Palsy of Indiana which is currently trying to serve over 12,000 children and adults with such vital services as diagnosis and medical treatment, speech therapy, psychiatric treatment, vocational training and job placement. Its aim is to help each child attain as near a normal life as his mental and physical capacities will permit. Nationally, the research arm of the organization, United Cerebral Palsy’s Research and Educational Foundation, has invested oyer $7,000,000 in the search for new knowledge that will help prevent this cruel crippler. It has also sponsored the training of many talented young scientists so that there would be more skilled minds to tackle this elusive problem. United Cerebral Palsy of Indiana is currently campaigning for funds to continue these programs. They ask that you invest in the happiness of a child by. giving him a chance to.learn and grow and look forward to a fuller life. We urge you tg keep this in mind when a United Cerebral Palsy volunteer asks for your contribution. Editorial Written by Dick Heller
