Commodores Win.. Again; Jackets Lose.. Again

Drop 6th In Row, 82-63, To Tigers

by Bob Shraluka The Decatur Yellow Jackets remained the lone Adams County basketball team without a victory as they suffered their sixth setback at the hands of old rival Bluffton, 82-63. in the Tiger gymnasium Friday night. The loss was also the third in a row in the Northeastern Indiana Conference for the Decaturites, who enter the four-team Hartford City holiday tournament Tuesday night. They meet the Airein the 7 o'clock game. If there was one encouraging note to Decatur high basketball fans last night, it was a bit of an improvement in the team's free-throw shooting. Hitting just 36 per cent. 39 of 107. before the game, the Yellow Jackets converted 17 of 31 last night for a mark of nearly 55 per cent. Far from good, but much better! , Another somewhat encouraging factor in the team's poor showing thus far was the work of Dave Hammond last night. The 6-4 center, who hadn't played much in the first five games, contributed 16 points to the cause. Foul Trouble This despite spending much of the third period and a portion of the fourth on the bench with four personal fouls. Hammond hit seven shots from the field, leading the team. Junior Sam Blythe, however, wns the leading scorer for the Jackets with 17 markers. It was Hammond’s basket that gave Decatur its only lead last night. After Ted Mahnensmith, a smooth and slick performer, hit on a jump shot, Bill Blythe scored on a fast break and Hammond hit on a jumper from the pivot. This gave the Jackets their Jone lead, 4-2. Dave. Terhune and Doh Bowman tossed in shots from the field and the Tigers were then off and running, as they scored 10 consecutive points and bolted into a. 12-4 lead. The Jackets cut one point off that margin and trailed, 18-11, after the first period. Narrow Gap Another bucket by Hammond nnd four of four from the charity stripe by Sam Blythe got. the Yellow Jackets within four. 21-17. early in the second .stanza. The gold and purple staved between four and seven ixiints in arrears

until Bluffton outscored them nine to three in the final two minutes of the period and took a 39-28 advanage to the dressing room at halftime. Midway in the third canta, Mahnensmith scored on a drive, bn a rebound, and then on a floorlength dash after stealing the basketball, boosting his club into a 52-36 lead. t I,ending by a 56-42 score at the start of the final stanza, the Tigers really began to find the range. After Sam Blythe dropped in a 15-footer, Bowman scored a threepoint play and little Joe Romine, the tough quarterback of Tiger grid teams, scored twice on fast breaks within 10 seconds. H1 s second fielder boosted the Tigers into a commanding 63-44 lead, and when Terhune and Bowman added two-jxiinters, conch Jack Cross’ lads had their third victory in six starts wrapped up as they held a 67-44 advantage.
