Discuss Remapping Os Three Stales Representatives from three state geological survey teams'met at the new Indiana-Purdue University regional campus at Fort Wayne Thursday to discuss new efforts in the rc-mapping of their states. Teams from Michigan, Ohio ancl. Indiana are attempting to bring up to date the m ips of the Fort Wayne quadrangle, which includes portions of northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan, and the Muncie quadrangle, covering an area south to Richmond, and a section of western Ohio. The new maps, .to be in 1” •- 4 miles scale, will show bedrock and glacial deposits and will be replacing older, less detailed map-; created years ago. New information on the territory, including that provided by recently drilled oil wells,' was discussed by the teams at Thursday’s meeting. The current program to remap the state began in 1958. Survey teams divided the state into eight separate map area?, each cove'ring 1 degree latitude by 2 degrees longitude. The first of the current series, the Indianapolis quadrangle, was completed several years ago. Representing the Indiana de? partment of conservation’s geological survey., with headquarters at Indiana University, Bloomington, were Henry Gray, head stratigrapher, W. J. Wayne, A. F. Schneider,. Gerald Johnson, Stanley Keller and Robert Shaver. Present from the Michigan geological survey were Robert Kelley, Garland Ells and F. W. Terwilliger. The Ohio geological survey was represented by Charles Surnmerson. Miss Jane Forsythe and Russell Brant at the meeting. Geological maps have become important in the designing and construction of highways and are used by the mining industry to determine the location of mineral deposits. They are also used for a variety of purposes by civil engineers, including urban planning. . " Host for the meeting was I. U. regional campus director, Dr. Ralph E. Broyles.
