Commodores Get Fifth Straight Win In Overtime

Myers 9 Three-Point Play Margin In 74 - 73 Triumph

by Bob Mrataka Terry Myers, a four-year veteran, came through in the “clutch,” as veterans are expected to do, Wednesday night, and provided the Decatur Catholic Commodores with their fifth win in succession in an overtime battle with Huntington Catholic at the Huntington gymnasium. The blond senior converted a three-potot play with 53 seconds remaining to play to bring his team from two points back into a 74-73 lead, and the green and gold hung on from there for the victory. The triumph at Huntington was the fifth in succession for the Commodores, after a season-open-ing 60-55 defeat at the haqds of Adams Central. Coach xtob Boyle’s lads, who host . a fotlr-, team holiday tournament next week, go for win number six Friday night at the Monmouth gymnasium, where they host the Aces of Arcola. Close Throughout After a nip and tuck first half, with the lead changing hands several times, the Commodores exploded to take an 11-point lead late in the third stanza. In the fourth canto, however, the Commodores fast break stopped and the Ramblers battled back and nearly pulled the contest out of the fire. The Commodores produced a rally of their own to knot the score and send the game into overtime. As the extra session opened Ray Eckert, who missed four of five charity attempts late in the contest, scored on a pair and the Rams held a 71-69 lead with 2:41 to play. Huntington got the ball back and went into a semi-stall, and with 1:42 to play, Eckrote canned another brace of foul tosses to give his team a four-point margin and it looked like the Commodore win streak was snapped. Myer* Comes Through With 1:29 left, however, Myers tipped in a shot. Jim

TERRY MYERS (Vet Comes Through) Schultz rebounded a missed charity shot by Bob Blomeke and with a minute to play, the Commodores set up. After several passes, Schultz, at the top of the circle, ripped the ball to Myers under the basket. The veteran performer laid the ball in and was fouled by Terry Flynn. With 53 seconds to play and the score knotted at 72-aH, Myers calmly dropped in the charity shot to put his club into the lead again. Possession of the ball changed five times before Tom Fink fired from 15 feet to the side of the biicket with four seconds to play. The shot went astray and the Commodores had their fifth straight. Grab Lead The Ramblers jumped into a 5-0 lead at the outset of the contest, but the Commodores came roaring back to take an 8-7 advantage on a pair of buckets by Bill Bolinger. Fink’s three-pointer, though, gave the Huntington lads an 18-16 lead entering the second stanza. Hie Decaturites hit their first four shots in the second session and built” tip a 24-20 advantage. After Flynn’s one-hander from the corner gave his club a 30-29 lead, Myers pumped in a fielder, Bolinger scored twice and Pat Gage once from the free throw line, and the green and gold had a 34-30 halftime lead. Sparked by fireball Johnny Lose, the Commodore fast break went into high gear in the third Lions Ink Flynn DETROIT (UPI) — The Detroit Lions have signed their fifth round draft choice, end John Flynn, who played this season with Toledo of the United Football League. period and with 2:12 to play, they held a 50-39 lead, the biggest margin either club enjoyed. Huntington cut the lead to 52-45, however, as the final quarter opened. Take Over As the Commodore fast break cooled, the Ramblers became redhot, and with 3:42 to play, Fink dropped in a pair of charity shots and sent his club into a 59-58 lead. The Commodores took the lead again, losi it and then Myers tied the score at 63-63 with a short jump shot. With 2:20 left, center Bob Blomeke scored from under and with 1:38 to play, Ron Eckert converted a free toss, giving she Rams a 66-63 lead. After Tom Baker and Flynn traded baskets, Ray Eckert scored once from the foul line to give his club a fcurpoint lead, 69-65, with just 55 seconds to play. But the Commodores refused to quit, and Lose scored on a drive with 49 seconds to go. With 26 seconds to play, Myers rebounded a missed charity attempt by Eckert, and at the 0:17 mark, Baker fired a one-hander from 25 feet out to tie the score. Flynn’s shot with five seconds to play missed its mark and the “barn burner” went into overtime. Balanced Scoring The Commodores continued their balanced attack, as Bolinger led the way with 18, Schultz and Myers added 14 and 13 respectively, Lose 11 and Gage 10. Navy To Fire Coach Hardin ANNAPOLIS, Md. (UPI) — The Naval Academy was expected to announce the “resignation*’ of football Coach Wayne Hardin today, ending a week of speculation as to his future. A source close to Hardin told United Press International Wednesday night that Hardin actually had been fired, but would accept the academy’* explanation that he resigned. “Hardin was fired but the academy will not make it sound this way when the announcement is made tomorrow (Thursday).” the source said. “Hardin will not make an issue of it because he hat his professional standing to maintain” The source asked to remain anonymous. Hardin will learn officially of his status at a news conference called by the academy for 3 p.m. EST today. Hardin, 37, has been head coach at Navy since 1959 and his teams suffered only one losing log in that tenure — this past season when the Midshipmen won three games, lost six and tied one. In addition, Hard-in-coached teams scored an unprecedentfed five straight victories over arch-rival Army before losing in 1964. His overall record was 38-20-2. Hardin still has four years to go on a five-year contract, under which he earns SIB,OOO a year. At the time he signed the new contract last year, he also was named as aide to E. E. (Rip) Miller, the assistant athletic director at Navy. First reports that Hardin had been dismissed or had resigned were circulated last Friday. Although academy officials denied at the time that he had been fired, they declined to say definitely that Hardin would be back next year.

(UPI) -Fourth-ranked and unbeaten Minnesota has lost starting forward Terry Kunze for the rest of the season allegedly for cheating on an examination. Kunze, a 6-6 senior, averaged 10.8 points in the Gophers' first four games. Minnesota faces unbeaten Utah State Saturday, plays tough Loyola of Chicago next Tuesday and launches its Big Ten season in January. Kunze was suspended Wednesday for “scholastic ineligibility.” United Press International learned the suspension was imposed by the all-university committee on student behavior for cheating on an examination. Dean of Students Edmund G. Williamson confirmed that Kunze was suspended for cheating but declined to disclose details of the alleged offense. Minnesota coach John Kundla said the loss of Kunze “hurt a lot.” “We’ll have to work twice as hard without him,” Kundla said.
