Bluffton Physician Is Awarded Grant Dr. Charles E, Jackson of the Caylor-Nickel research foundation, Bluffton, has received $14,040 from Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America to initiate genetic, clinical and biochemical investigations into childhood muscular dystrophy. In one aspect of his project, Dr. Jackson will attempt to refine re-cently-developed tests for the detection of muscular dystrophy long before clinical symptoms become manifest. Early in the course of muscular dystrophy, important enzymes leak out of the muscle cell and are found in the blood in adnormal amounts. Patients in the preclinical stage of the disease can be identified by measuring these serum enzyme level#, thereby allowing the earliest possible application of therapy. The method has also been used, with considerable success, to identify parents who are without clinical symptoms themselves, but who can pass the disease on genetically to their offspring. With further refinement, the tests can be used as a basis for genetic counselling.
