Closet Has Space! How To Find It
A close}, needs two things to give it maximum usefulness, says John Concord, home modernization . consultant to Masonite Corporation. They are accessibility and full utilization of space.
For example, a closet eight feet long and 19 inches' wide may have a door located 12 inches from one end. Reaching clothing hung in the long wing is almost impossible. Cure; Open It Dp Concord says the cure here is to open up the closet by removing the existing door, its frame and the long wail. Then hang space-saving sliding doors over your new full-length. easilyaccessible closet. Your closet then can be modern looking and functional. If the old wall is non-load bearing, the job is simplified, but it may be accomplished by eliminating a bearing wall and installing a header of sufficient size to support the load above. Professional advise is urged by Concord. . Sliding doors may be purchased or made by -the home handyman. In many, the facing is Masonite hardboard because of its stability, durablity and good appearance: Self Divider Useful Once accessible, the space should be organized for hanging of garments and compartmented for storage of boxes and other bulgy items. Concord - offers a free plan showing an on-shelf divider made of thin, space-sav-ing hardboard. For a copy of AE-337, send a postcard to the Home Service Bureau, Box B, Chicago, 111. Save Leftover Siding For Future Repairs While mineral Aber wall siding has rocklikc weathering qualities and requires almost no maintenance, a panel or two may be damaged by a heavy impact such as a falling tree branch or a truck backing into the driveway. For thia reason, it’s a good idea to have your builder or residing contractor leave you a few leftover panels of the siding for repairs. Replacing a damaged panel Is a simple job- Just pull out the three nails-they're easy to get at. Then ease out the old panel, slip the new one into place, and nail it on. If the new one varies rllj'htly in color, your house may heed washing.

Wind Baffles One of the slickest attachments to a fence’ top to make more conffort is a wind baffle. Place an 18-ineh baffle at an angle of 45 to fin degrees pointed inward to the yard. This causes the wind to arc upwards and protects the yard for one and half times the height of the fence.
Smart Deck If you want to give a distinctive character to your wood deck, you might consider having the banister posts se t on an angle away from the deck floor. You can use ordinary dimension lumber such as Douglas fir for both deck framing, floor and railing.
Most Popular With Renters Low - Rise Apartment Buildings
Americans may not know It, but at least 80 per cent of all now apartment structures built are in the one to three story group says House and Home, authoritative national home journal. Most people see high rise apartments being built in many cities and the tendency, says a west coast lumber official, is to think that this size apartment building predominates.
The official points out that one reason wh ythe low rise apartments dominate the field is tha£. people want homey surroundings. Not everybody is happy to have a cave in a high hise building. Another reason for their popularity is that builders are using a large amount of lumber in conRight Hues Good News On Roof “Color is one of our most important building materials,” This statement made by Mrs, Nancy Rubey,' color consultant to many builders and designers, sums up the growing awareness of architects, builders and construction contractors of the role color plays in today’s attractive homes. Mrs. Rubey proves her theme by showing how a drab house gains sparkle and distinction by the proper use of color, how color can appreciably change the apparent size of a house, and how the lines and proportions of a home can be modified or accented with color planning. She points out that industrial designers for many years have relied on color not only to step up the appearance but also improve the performance of automobiles, kitchen appliances, even factory machinery. But the building industry was very slow in adopting the technique of color application, she says. In recent years, however, perhaps because of competitive pressures or more selective choice on the part of home shoppers, progressive builders have sought the aid of color consultants in planning their developments. Another Important factor, Mrs. Rubey stressed, is the growing availability of building materials with better color values. The new heavyweight asphalt roof shingles, for example, come in pastels, black, white, forest colors and blends. While white asphalt Shingles are always popular, Mrs. Rubey notes increasing use of gray, black, and the blended colors with dominant tones of brown, red, green, gold, or sand. The color is contained in the ceramic granules that coat the shingles. “The roof is the largest expanse of the house visible from the street, which makes it a real challenge and offers greater possibility for effective use of color to achieve a harmonious overall result,” Mrs. Rubey points out. * Accent Window To give a room real character you might have a tall, narrow window designed so that it fits right along side the fireplace. You can frame this window in a wood like west coast hemlock and try and retain the natural color of the wood. Oregon produces more softwood plywood than any other state. ,

, struction to make the one to three I story apartments as nearly like t a single family home as possible. Many renters in these low rise units, says the lumberman, are older people who have just sold • their home and moved into an i apartment for the ’ first time, t They moved probably because ■ they didn’t want to bother with ; yard work, but they also wanted an apartment home that was like their own.
To develop such a feeling in low rise apartments, builders Use wood siding, sa on a single family home. They use wood for room interiors — paneling in living room and bedrooms, warm wood kitchen cabinets, built-ins throughout, just like home. The result is an apartment with warmth, charm and imagination, and one that is highly sought after. Generally the siding is western red cedar. The cabinets can be pine, Douglas fir on any of the new and attractive family of western woods. The idea is to make these low rise apartments friendly, warm and home-like. The cost of these wood-framed and wood-sided apartment structures runs considerably below the cost of non-wood structures, the lumber officials points out, making possible , lower rents and higher occupancy.
Q. We plan to have wood windows in our new house. Is insulating glass worth the added cost? A. Yes, for several reasons. You’ll save on heating (and airconditioning) costs, eliminate the expense of separate storm windows, and get added comfort by knocking out a major source of drafts-cold glass surfaces. All styles of stock windows made of ponderosa pine are available with double glazing. • * * Q. Is there any harm in closing the attic louvers to keep the house warmer in winter? A. Yes. The attic must be properly ventilated, especially in winter, to prevent condensation of moisture, which will rot the roof beams. • • • Q. My Tudor-style home has stucco walls that are badly cracked and need extensive repairs. Can mineral fiber siding be applied easily over the stucco? A. Yes, this versatile material can be put on right over the stuc4 co, saving the expense of repairs I and painting for years to come. • • • Q. A key to our front door has disappeared. Is it necessary to put in an entire new lock for protection? A. Just get a new tumbler to fit your present door lock. The old one can be taken out after loosening two long, machine screws on the latch side. The new tumbler comes with its own set of keys.
