Prototype Completed: Local Go Karters To Begin Producing New Type Os Kart
The Decatur go-kart clan, which recently turner cut neaiv person* for its year end awards banquet, is on t ie verge oftoeing further be It i red in in o~e of toe country's finest grownig spo.ta three of its members are now in the pprocess of becoming kart manufactures. The t-io — lo ai wtldi.ig shop owner Floyd Mcßride, General Electric planning depaprtment staffmemberNealKeller com.v staff member Neal Keller and vending machine mechanic LeVerne “Moe” Brewer — exhibited the prototype of their new kart design, dubbed the “Fugitive,” at the Sportsmen’s ka ting association awards banquet November 28, iiiggcut selling point on the new ka.t will be an "adjustable” frame and seat. The adjustability feature will enable the low budg t kart enthusiast to participate in both the p pilar types of kart raci. g with a single machine. Two Types of Racing Go kart enth' siasts presently indulge in one or both of two types of kart racing. Same prefer "Sprint” racing on short, tightly curved circuits where speed reach 40 or 50 miles per hour. Others go for the long, road-type courses of “enduro” racing, where speeds on the faster karts approach 90. But most karters, not given to halfway measures, like both. • The rub is that each .requires a special kind of kart. Sprint racing is done on a short closesitting e.ect so that he can utilize full vision and a lot of “body, english” in the tight corners. Enduro racing calls for slightly longer wheelbase kart with a semi-reclining driver position to cut down wind resistance. The two-kart requirement for participating in both types of racing has fbreed a lot of eager enthusiasts to choose either one or the other brand of racing for their money. Those who wanted to participate in both had to face the expense of maintaining! two machines. . Adjustable Design The new kart design, with an adjustable length and seat, gives a utility vehicle capable of perform! ig competitively in both types of racing. Featuring a wheelbase that stretches from tht popular sprint length of 44 inches to the equally popular enduro length of 47 inches and a seat with 18 separate p sition adjustments, the "Fugitive” will be offered to karters at the same price now paid for single machines, making it possible to compete in both types of racing with the Game cash outlay required for only one. The prototype model, built at Mcßride’s welding and engineering shop in Decatur, took about a month of construction and design time. Track tests were conducted at the Decatur track shortly before the snows and cold weather set in. " "Handling,’ said Mcßride, “is excellent We won’t have to make any modi ications there. We will make a few minor changes for comfort’s sike in control position and seat design, though. ’I really feel that we have something here. I’ve been driving for two years now and I put everything I’ve learned into this design.” Production Jigs Mcßride made several jigs from the prototype model. These jigs will be used in turning out the production models, five of which are already under construction. Except for wheels, steering wheels, steering joints, rear axles , and pedals, all the metal parts of the kart are made at Mcßride’s shop. Upholstery work is also done in Decatur, at Bauman’s Upholstering. The karts, complete with large enduro gas tanks for long races, will sell for $349 —a price which will make them competitive with other models on the market. Brewer, Keller and Mcßride plan to have at least two pruau--tion models completed for exhibit in the upcoming -Fort Wayne car show at the coliseum on Dec. 11, 12 and 13. Brewer and Mcßride, aware that sales volume will hinge on racing success, will campaign two of the new karts during the 1865 racing season.

McPeak Under Fire As Redskin's Coach WASHINGTON (UPD — The Washington Redskins’ Board of Directors meets Friday with the uncertain status of head Coach Bill McPeak high on the agenda. A club spokesman said no announcement on the coaching situation is expected to be made until after the final game against the Baltimore Colts next Sunday. But he added that McPeak and his coaching staff would be a major subject for discussion, even if no final decision is made. (( McPeak, who has coached the Redskins since 1961, had his contract renewed last year on a virtual “improve or else” edict. The team’s 6-7 record thus far is considerably be ter than last year’s 3-11, but also disappointing in view of the coach's drastic pre - season trades. These were designed to make the Redskins an immediate title contender, with McPeak sacrificing five at his first 10 draft choices for the 1965 season. But Washington got off to an awful start, losing its first four games and five of the first six. The team clawed its way back to a fairly respectable 6-6 record before losing to Pittsburgh last Sunday. i »•. * Possible Realignment For NFL TV On Sunday NEW YORK (UPD — Saturday’s crucial game between the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants has caused a possible realignment of a regionally televised National Football League contest on Sunday. If the Browns tie or lose, the PH'lade.Sphia-at-St. Louis game will be broadcast by the Dallas, New York, Cleveland, Washington and Chicago networks on Sunday but if Cleveland wins, the regularly- scheduled Washington Redskin - Baltimore Colt game will be telecast. Burs Acquire Rodgers CHICAGO (UPD — Chicago Cub veteran shortstop Andre Rogers, a .239 hitter last season, has been sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash and minor league shortstop Roberta Pena. Pena, who batted .303 for Ashville of the Southern League last season, was immediately assigned to the Cub’s Salt Loke City farm club of the Pacific Coast League.
