Johnson Given Report On Diseases WASHINGTON (UPI) —President Johnson predicts U.S. medical science, aided by large amounts of federal money, can soon score an “historic breakthrough’’ in the ages-long battle to conquer heart disease, cancer and stroke. Johnson made his forecast Wednesday in accepting the report of the President’s Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke. The 28 - member group was appointed laht March by the President to find out "with rigorous precision’’ how these illnesses affect Americans and what can be done about it. The committee called for a $2.9 billion research and treatment program employing all medical facilities of government, universities and communities during the next five years. The proposal is built around a network of regional centers which would be used for a stepped-up program of research, treatment and education to stem fatalities from the diseases which now account for more than 70 per cent of the deaths in the United States. Johnson, who suffered a serious heart attack in 1955, said in accepting the report, "I call upon all our people—our doctors and laymen, our citizens in and out of government, our people organized on the federal, state and local levels—to [Kinder the materials you present and to consider with a full sense of urgency the recommendations you make.” ' He said that his administration fully intended to reduce the incidence of heart disease, cancer and stroke. Martin Luther King today received the $54,600 Nobel Peate Prize for 1964—an award he has pledged to contribute to r the cause of civil rights in the United States. “I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith»in the future of mankind,” the Negro clergyman said. “I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history.” The check and a diploma emblematic of the prize were presented to. King by Gunnar Jahn, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, at a ceremony at Oslo University. King is the third Negro in history to receive the award. He was cited for “non-violent” leadership of the civil- rights movement. “Martin King’s name will endure for the way he has waged his struggle, personifying in his conduct the words that were spoken to mankind: ‘whosoever shall smite thee on the right cheek, turn to faun the other also,’ ” JahiF said in his presentation remarks. “Martin Luter King's unarmed struggle has been waged in his own country. Its result has been that an obdurate, cen-turies-old and traditional conflict is now nearing its solution.” King said he accepted the prize on behalf of the civil rights cause. “Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover away to live in peace. King said. a “If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. “The torturous road which has led from Montgomery. Ala., to Oslo bears witness to this truth. "This is a road over which millions of Negroes are travelling to find a new sense of dignity. This same road has opened for all Americans a new era of progress and hope."
